Hi. Thanks it worked. What it is, is that I had originally I had Windows10 point to my desktop. Then I installed Win7 because my laptop is an old one and pointed Win7 to the desktop.. Because Win7 is no longer supported, I've had to revert back to Win10. I thought I'd lost the layout, but indeed it was still there when I went back to Win10. It's just that I'll have top place my folders and files back into the fences. Rich
Hi. All my Windows10 desktops (I have a few) have been moved from Windows default location to locations of my choice. Unfortunately there are times when I've had reconstruct my Fences layout because it's been lost. These incidents would not have happened if Fences layout data was located in the folder where a desktop is. So, if I move a desktop folder, Fences layout data moves with it. So, if there was a free version of Fences 2, they can use portals, and I, who paid for the product, cannot? That cannot be just. I have a copy of Fences 2 on my PC, I will try that. If it works I will say, why on earth did I buy Fences.

Okay, I ran GameStop Now. I uninstalled FENCES from there. I did NOT choose to delete everything. Then I had a reboot. Then I went into Microsoft's ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS utility. I saw a Fences Pro entry, but the utility reported an error. I simply had the utility remove Fences Pro in the listing. I opened GameStop Now. I installed FENCES PRO again. I have two entries in my Windows Add/Remove Programs utility. Fences Pro at 8.53Mb and Fences®Pro at 10.66Mb. Previously, tonight, I managed to remove Fences (Free) and that did not mess with my screen. I thought I'd try to remove Fences Pro, just leaving Fences®Pro. But, Fences went, I lost my fences. Okay, I wonder if part of the problem was using a FENCES shortcut that did not quite tally. I went into Start> All Programs> Stardock> Object Desktop and selected the FENCES icom to send to desktop. When I use that shortcut, to bring up FENCES, FENCES comes up okay. So, maybe I might have been using a shortcut that was not quite kosher. All seems fine now.
What I think I did was select "Switch User" to log onto another User. Of course, this is a Windows thing. But, I probably did not fully log off from the original User. Then I probably ran FENCES for the first time after I'd switched User. But now I get the get "Fences has not been properly activated". Can I remove some file that might be corrupted, and will FENCES then remake it?
On Windows XP I have set up several User Accounts. I have FENCES Pro. This is not normally a problem. I can use FENCES with any User Account I create. But, I'm having a difficulty with one account. When I try to start up FENCES I get" "Fences has not been properly activated". I've tried to reactivate using STARDOCK. I even uninstalled, then reinstalled, but still get same message.
Hi. Well, I sorted it by running IMPULSE and getting the update that way. But for a while there I was panicking. Not being able to place items would have completely wrecked my desktops. Thing is, a lot, like me, will probably turn off IMPULSE starting at startup which led to the update not being cottened-on to. Well, all's well that ends well.
Today, Nov 1st, is end of FENCES beta testing period. On PC startup I'm told FENCES will run with reduced functionality, which includes not being able to place folders and files into fences. If you want Fences and you have no alternative but to download Inpulse to do so, you are forced to download Inpulse. But, because Inpulse can be uninstalled or disabled, it's not necessarily a major bugbear for the home user at least. IMHO.
Just further: What we are after (I think) is either a program that modifies Windows Folders & Files program, so that we are able to "fence-in" folders and files just like Fences does. Or, some super-duper program that modifies the desktop (like Fences) - but with the ability to have more than one desktop to look at. At the moment, clicking on the desktop fades in or out objects (folders or files) that are in the desktop folder. I'm not a programmer, but one wonders

Okay 4 cents: With Fences being free, there was some business rational for requiring Impulse to be installed. Although quite a significant number of people (myself included) were a bit miffed about having to install Impulse. I imagine that it might be much more problematical to force installation of Impulse with the paid version. My 2 cents: If a program is free, and you have to download Impulse to get it, you are being forced to download Impulse. Of course you are. You are not though being forced to download Fences. Like many, I don't play games on my PC, so I'm only interested in Fences. I've disabled Impulse ( I think) with msconfig. </p
This "fencing-in" is fantastic. It's so superior to simply arranging folders and files by name, type etc. Fencing-in really makes the desktop come of age. Because, after all, the thing about desktops is that it's a visual thing. IMHO, there should be as little depth as possible to the folders hierarchy, I mean it's better, I find, when the folders are spread-out under a heading, of objects that are fenced-in, rather than having folders within folders etc. At the
