Weapons question - newbie in Galactic Civilizations II

I just started playing GCII- ultimate edition (after a real pain getting it to run). Now that it runs OK, none of my ships have weapons, and none are available in the ship building screen. There is also nothing on the tech trees about developing weapons. What is going on here????
