I have it set to Hide-offscreen when not in use, but whenever it pops up for me to use or hides when I'm done, it does so in a sluggish manner. In dock settings, under performance options, I have it set to "normal quality" with "optomize for performance" checked. However if I just go to where those settings are (without changing anything) it runs a lot smoother. That fix however is temporary, eventually it gets sluggish again and I have to go back to those settings (again without changing any
