D2 is still amazing, even today. It has flaws, but no other action RPG really comes close, which is sad considering the fact that the formula isn't all that hard.

You can make different Dwarven Snipers in DotA also based on items, its not some original idea he came up with... In fact Sniper has some completely different builds, Scattershot + mana regen build for super efficient creep farming and the ability to spam assassinate, or a physical damage focused build (headshot + range + stats) with items like Buriza's, with assasinate used as a finishing move, etc.
No, Recipes are pretty bad. For expierienced players they're ok, for high level they bring some depth.. but its the bane for new players. Alot new players i know and/or friends i tried to get to play Dota quitet after 2-3 Sessions because of the complexity of the Recipe System of Dota. I like it, because i play dota since a few years with around +1k games per Year (Y, im a freak ) The System innocev posted is far
You don't get an XP bonus for going random in DotA, that would be overpowered. You get a gold bonus because you don't have to "buy" your hero. Its 250 gold.
Demigod can have the good features of DotA. But people have different opinions on which are the good features. Some people, for example, think recipes are a good feature. I think they're absolutely god awful and the worst thing I've seen in just about any game I've played, out of hundreds and hundreds of games.
[e digicons]:D[/e] LOL The "worst thing" you've seen in any game ever
You want to "strategize" and not be a "tactics monkey", yet at the same time you want the game to be simplistic and "just smash things durrr awesome explosions"? You don't see the contradiction there?
"I don't have to concentrate on hitting just-so on this zerg or that zerg. I can stomp my way to a good position, then trust the AI will Do The Right Thing(tm) while I focus on dropping the right skill at the right time for impact. I can strategize</
Edge scrolling is needed The other big one is minimap. Without minimap half the strategy goes out the window, its far easier to coordinate teamwork and also watch out for ganks and the like with a minimap active. Zooming out everytime is NOT a good replacement.
That's a reasonable suggestion. We'll see what we can do. Taking a step back this is what we're trying to get at: From a game design point of view, we want each Demigod to be very special. We explicitly don't want tons of them. But we do want to make
I look forward to that and I think there's a ton of potential. I didn't mean to sound obsessive over the quantity of "stuff". However I thought I addressed that when I said I hope that each Demig
OK. How many new Heroes has Blizzard given out in Warcraft for free?
Three. Just looked them up. The tinker, firelord and alchemist were all added for free. http://www.battle.net/war3/neutral/ Not to mention the game shipped with 12, 9 were added in expansions, on top of a complete RTS game with 4 factions, about 50-60 playable units, 50+ items, hundreds of neutral units, a multiplayer that received many patches for fixes and balance, a map editor t
The only way to get more gold in DotA is to be a better player, its not like the game randomly gives someone 3X as much gold. Apart from that, high level DotA (i.e. not random pubbie games on b.net) is all about teamwork. Many of the most powerful heroes (Enigma, Rootfrellen, Earthshaker) shine most in a team environment. On the other hand, many of the popular pub-stomping heroes (Phantom Assassin and company) are much weaker in real high level games.
Frogboy, I understand that you're part of the dev team for the game. Do you really think it makes sense to compare a single Demigod in this game to an entire race in Starcraft, as you're doing in this thread? A race in Starcraft contains 12-15 units, 10+ buildings, many units have various powers, etc. A single race also contains an immense variety in ways to play. From what I've seen, each demigod is nowhere near this and is much more like a character in a fighting game or a hero in War
I just had one concern from this hands on. If you're going to only have 8 heroes, they really need to be polished to a high quality. And by high quality I don't mean graphically, I mean they have to play interestingly. They really need to differentiate themselves from one another and have really cool, complicated abilities. Right now it sounds like these heroes are a little vanilla. The Rook rolls a rock, slams a hammer, etc. The Torchbearer has basically blizzard, frost
