I can attach the saved game that crashes every time I attempt to end the current turn. This game also would consistently crash after a galactic event would occur. In fact, that's what initially happened just now - galactic event, game crash. Now, however, the game simply CTD once the turn button is clicked.

Can't exit the ideology screen if not enough points to unlock an option. I have 168 benevolence & 20 pragmatic. There's only 1 benevolent left but it costs 169 and I cannot exit the screen in any fashion: done button says I need to make a choice first. I can't buy anything pragmatic either with that paltry amount. But what's going to happen when I'm maxed out?
Since you try to achieve a quite similar task, I'll think about sharing the source
That would certainly be very generous of you and quite appreciated by me (as long as you're not expecting any sort of "miracle code" from me... like I said, programming seems to be my bane in the otherwise quite comfortable digital world.) And if not, that's fine too. I downloaded Visual Basic Express and been plinking around on it. Once I get a dribbl

Yar! (Bit late with the pirate talk.) No, Stardock hasn't contacted me about the edited copy. Oh, well, at least I can still implement my corrections and not cringe whenever someone talks about a "big ball of steal." [e classic]:-|[/e] I like the idea of salting away a paper for a year. (hoping for a less creepy smiley... let's see... hmmm... [e classic]:)[/e] sokay, found 'em.) Not very p

Weeelll... The live data sets are definitely a huge plus. I used Access cuz it's easy and it's more of a labor of love than production. Besides, a fair number of the users I support use it, so it's good for me to keep in the mix and know what they're up against. :) Another big issue is that I'm not a very talented programmer. I tend to plod along and get stuff done, but it takes me a while. The few shining moments of brilliant coding are mostly obscured by monotonous years of drudg

Well, one cool thing is that the tech form will show all the related goodies that tech gives you. That's handy when I'm working on my mods & I'm nowhere near the game and don't feel like wading through the raw data files looking for stuff. Also, I'm currently got a couple queries that'll list the various weapons, defenses and engines, their technology research cost and then spit out "efficiencies": component value for research cost, component size for research cost and construction cost,

What I find most galling about the whole spelling thing is that I'm actually a miserable speller when it comes to my own stuff, but when I'm reading something - anything - that someone else wrote, they leap out & clobber me. I remember once opening up a packet of sugar to put in some iced tea & saw a spelling error on the back of the packet. And yet, when I'm writing my research papers or my own books or tech manuals or emails or letters or what-have-you, the dum

I've been working on an Access 2007 database for my mod work & thought I'd check with the community to see if other might be interested in it. It's not the most polished, but it does sport a large form that will link any given technology to the various "beniis" it grants (civilization abilities, planetary improvements, starbase modules, starship components and invasion tactics.) In that regard, I think it's kinda slick. :) I've built in some controls by which I can turn on & off vario

Sorry for the lengthy delay in reply. What between the uncertainty of having a job to go to in the morning (gotta love this economy...), roughly half of all my friends & family having birthdays in August (including my wife & I - December in Wisconsin can get kinda lonely, I guess...), what-ever holiday we just had & was spent camping (beautiful weather for a change), I've gotten around to doing this and, of course, it works. Which begs from me this question: when I looked in that

Ummm... crud, no, forgot completely about those. Sigh... Thanx for the heads-up on that - I'm hoping that's where the problem is lurking. After this week, I'm going to need a good, long session of stomping on aliens!

I wasn't sure if I should post here or in the mods. In any case, I was working with my mod but couldn't get things to work out correctly. The biggest problem had been that every time I'd start with the Terrans, the only tech they'd have at the beginning was the History of Extremes. I got annoyed & wanted to play the game a bit, so I clicked off Mods, restarted & voila! when the Terrans started, they only had the History of Extremes. I restored the Data/English XMLs & restarted. Same thing. I del

Okay, I really hate to be PITB about this, but I'm still having problems. Using the MODS folder, the very best I could do with my modding attempt is have some of the new engine techs show correctly but anything beyond Stellar Folder, nope. It'd show up along the far left as a "beginning" tech. I tried to look at other mods from the library but I'll be blasted if not a single one I looked at uses the mod folder - they all say to overwrite the game files. Fine, whatever. I back up the whole DATA d

The Last Gasp (as it were) Nothing seems to come very easily for us in the Terran Alliance, although I suppose it would be more accurate to say that nothing we *want* seems to come very easily for us. And what we want - still want - is Thala. First the misbegotten Thalans surrender to the Krynn. And now the Krynn surrender to their "good friends and allies" the Korx. Sigh... Of course, at this point, Thala would be more of a nice toy rather than anything else of serious conseque
Hehehe excellent fella-am interested in some of those adv techs like Stellar Folding-never seen it myself
I love 'em. Small, fast and almost an absolute necessity on an immense map. With supreme miniaturization and the Hyperion Shrinker, I can fit an advanced troop module with two stellar folders onto a tiny hull. I call them my advanced assault sloops; in this current game, any of my regular planets can crank one out every other turns and they have a movement of 22 parse

So, I swear to God that the computer is doing its level best to p*ss me off! Remember how I had all my trade routes running to New Iconia? And then remember how the Iconians were only in existence because of those self-same trade routes? And, now, remember if you will what the thrice-damned Thalans did? Well, those stupid Iconians did the same d@mn thing. Not but one turn after begging for help from me to save them from the savage Korx, the b*****ds roll-over and surrender to the Drath. That rea

I had some ideas about some alignment-specific mass sensor systems that I wanted to limit to one a ship a la the sensor array, but with some other little tweaks. Oh, well, I'll keep hoping that maybe the devs will pull that attribute out of the binaries and into the XMLs.

5 Replies 5,114 Views

I had some ideas for different types of sensors & I wanted to model them after the sensor array but I don't see anything in the component editor nor in the XML files themselves that shows the Sensor Arrays as being materially different than sensors. That being said, I've just realized that I've always taken the game's word for it that only one could be installed on any given ship, so I might be barking up a tree that shouldn't exist. But, if there is a way to limit components to one per hull, I'

Not as dramatic or elegant as some; more of a sort rambling commentary... Over my weekend gaming spree I managed to get in two games, one of which is still going. The first one I had to "terminate" because it was quite obvious that I was about to get a can of whoop @$$ opened on me by the Thalans. It was down to them, me and the Altarians - who were obnoxious but not enough so to stall the Thalans. Sigh... Second game puts me and my beloved Terrans stuck on the middle edge
When I've used the modular files in the subdirectories I've copied the XML headers into my files, which seems to work. And for other files, they go in ModFolder/Data. There is no Data\English folder ever used in the mod folder.
Thank you! That's quite helpful! Not be more of a PITA, but, what's the difference between the TechTrees directory & the Techs directory? In fact, what on earth is the Techs directory for, since TechTrees have their own directory as do the ship com
If you want to completely replace the existing one, you'd have ModName\Data\GC2Types.xml. If you just want to add a few new parts, you'd make a xml file with *just* those parts in it, and put it as ModName\Data\ShipComponents\MyNewShipParts.xml, etc. The mods folder has its own structure which the game will create when you use it, and each folder's use should be pretty self-explanatory. It's not the same structure as the Data\English\etc.
Okay... My experiments over the w

Did not know that & not 100% sure that the modding guide was clear on that (or that my aging eyes were clear enough to read it properly.) In any case, I'd been operating on the assumption that it was structured along the lines of the standard files, just one directory deeper. That'll make hay with my mod, I'm afraid. Almost tempted to call in sick tonite to fix that, but I'd better not... I'll have a stab at this tonite when I get home & (hopefully) fix the mod too if needs be. Thanx! :D

Well, the point behind orbital bombing is more in line of what's going on. You're bombing them in the first place when you invade. What if you want to destroy their infrastructure but not commit the troops? If we want to use WWII analogies, the Allies did that to the Axis with some moderate success. Sure, the factories & such could be & were rebuilt, but that meant the consuption of resources & time that could have otherwise gone toward tanks, planes, ships, bombs, guns, etc. Same idea - I want

Well, pretty much all of the ones in the Data\English directory, including the techtrees. I've placed them in both G:\Galactic Civilizations 2\Mods\Mine\Data\English and G:\Galactic Civilizations 2\twilight\Mods\Mine\Data\English. I had lifted the Default mod structure & deleted the stuff that I wasn't changing to keep the file size down when I ZIPped it up.
