Yes, it can. It has been done. Many times. And you would never know the system was a Windows box. Having experienced the loss of a faithful companion and member of our family just over a year ago I'm reminded of the following Rudyard Kipling poem: The Power of the Dog THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; And when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we always arrange for more? Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear. </
I think I get it.........Chinese hackers breaking into hospital records (death of privacy/security) gives birth to identity theft/fraud etc. It's all just a harmonious cycle......hehe [e digicons]O:)[/e]
But it's funny you mention "elevated privileges". We have to set up all of our users as local Administrators on their PCs. Why? Because we have some in house software that requires access to the registry. Our Apps team claims that "there is no other way". Course, until we got off from XP, Outlook wouldn't work, either, if the user wasn't local Admin. *sigh*
</p

That's ITs fault for not exposing the company's defects to the FBI, etc....as for fraud? That should be dealt with using the DoJ...and has nothing to do with the hacking. If the computers were run the way IT knows how, the hacking would have been VERY difficult, but still not impossible.
Agreed.

When humanity finally gives birth to AI 2.0 it will spell the end of our awkward coexistence and instead usher in the glorious totalitarian reign of AI. Faster, smarter, more efficient than the human we will have brought on our own obsolescence. At the end of the day, isn't that what evolution is all about? If we fight to protect ourselves from 'the machines' aren't we just hampering the natural course of evolution? <jed

Personally I think this new horizon is awesome! For one I believe AI can bring immeasurable advancements in areas such as aviation safety etc. Having been a rotorhead (in another lifetime) I understand that particular issue from both sides of the coin (that of the pilots and of the passengers) and which is why I believe the advancements to AI that the above technology will bring can only serve to make air travel both safer and more efficient.

I am in agreement with Andreas Marx of AV-test and his point that while those vulnerabilities exist they would seem most dangerous from a 'targeted' approach. Having said that, I have long espoused a privilege-based security policy resembling whitelist theory as opposed to a third-party software control-based security policy more consistent with the traditional blacklist approaches. Today I received yet another call from the toll-free number that has been calling me on and off (sometimes multiple times in one day) for several months. I had answered a call from that number during the first month's assault on my digits (after 4 or 5 unanswered attempts) and determined they were a 'third-party' calling on behalf (supposedly) of my carrier. They asked if I was satisfied with my 'plan' and if it 'met my
