I had a very similar problem, trying to get Stardock Central connecting to the internet and despite the fact that I had no firewall whatsoever I was unable to establish a connection. I then realized that SDC adapty the Internetoptions from the Microsh*t Internet Explorer Which i have never used on that System (using Mozilla Firefox). I went to the MIE-Settings and fixed the proxy and voilà, works fine now.
