A way to fix the balance issues with being able to blockade planets would be to only allow such if the planet in question is within your area of influence (colored stuff), and deny orbit if it is merely within range. After all, could you honestly expect a single man drone to protect an entire planet from colonization? This would mean that an enemy might colonize a poor planet in order to expand their influence and force your ships out of orbit of the planet they want. Serving two perposes:

I find myself agreeing with Reaver, often I never have even a single ship for defence, but rather, a few starbases placed well and fully upgraded. My economy is always so insaine that I have enough money to simply buy all the ships I need at a moments notice. Most games I will have 100000 bc by the time I reach tier 10 in weapons research. This means that the AI always --always-- threatens me, demanding tribute. And while I refuse, they declare war and then find themselves outmatched. The

I realize what he is saying, mostly because there are races that slide into that pitfall --not adapting their ships-- and lose because of this. The Dregin, and Arceans, and sometimes the Torian or Korax will adapt their ships. But often the other races, like the Humans, and the Yor, and epecially the Thalans seem to fail in that area. This can be offset by other advances, it seems that the Thalans have a very quick planet grabbing effort, and if they fall behind early, they have lost, while

In my experience, the random games tend to be unbalanced in the placement of the starting locations. Two of the worst games I have ever attempted came from bad starts. In one game, I was stuck in a corner of a huge map with no stars even close enough for my colony ship to reach! (I had to customize it with life support to reach the nearest one) Decidedly, a wait of almost 20 turns for a ship to reach a planet put me behind in the colony rush. I had no chance at all in the later stages of th

My game turned out a bit different than all that. I set it up so that there were four races, the Dregin, the Torian, and the Arceans, and my custom. The Dregin and Aceans were set to the highest difficulty level, while the Torians were set to bright. After the colony rush, the Dregin built a large military and began making demands of me. I gave in, for the most part. But the Dregin declared war anyhow, and took 3 of my planets before I could beat him back. Unnoticed by me, the Torians had
