Asking for proof of purchase is entirely reasonable in my opinion. The reality is if your key is already in use then its likely because somebody downloaded the game and used a key generator. Stardock are just as much a victim as you in this circumstance and they would be incredibly silly to act without verifying exactly who the key belongs to. And as has already been said, you might get better results with a calmer approach.
