Well, I for one hadn't participated in the Sins or Galciv Beta (I own and love both, and desperately looking forward to Elemental), but I follow enough of your posts to know that you were serious when you said the Demigod beta would suck ;) I must say though, the game really has come a long way and I'm quite impressed. Keep up the good work.

It'd be really nice to be able to look at your skill tree. citadel and the shops. Sitting around doing nothing while dead is no fun for anyone. Giving players the option to have at least have 20 seconds or so to plan their next move (players that haven't played so much they know their next 15 moves in advance, anyways) while dead would be a welcome addition to the game, particularly for newer players. It isn't as if being out of the fight, losing all the experience and gold that entails

I thought it might be fun to make a post where we listed three things that as a gamer you feel are required for a truly epic game that you might be playing years from now. Keeping it at three makes it readable, so try and narrow it down to the stuff you really care about. 1) Nerdtastic character customization. The two games I have gotten the most mileage out of over the years, Master of Magic and Dominions 3, both have really intense character customization options. Some form of point

After reading my post, I realize that it comes off as a bit harsh. On the other hand, I really, really want to see this game succeed. But you can't simply say that you have "So many more options than DotA for hero development" when basically all that comes down to is 3 more skills, and out of the 6, they aren't particularly well balanced. I always hope that game designers understand (unless they are running a D&D campaign, but certainly on the internet) that sometimes less is more. But le

One of the most depressing facets of the internet is that people don't generally read posts this long. It probably says something about human civilization in general. Some responses: I cannot agree more that light/dark demigods need to be more easily distinguishable. I understand there are color circles beneath them, but with the creeps I don't even have to glance to wonder, why should I with the demigods? How hard could it possibly be to darken some textures? I really hope this is ad

I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't agree that Minotaurs and Archers both need to do more damage, as they are basically pointless speedbumps. The real dissapointment IMO is the Angels though, who come out AFTER the Catapultsaurs, deal what, 5x less damage (even less than that really, as their strafing attacks end up giving them a very low attack speed), and die virtually right away as they sweep past enemy towers. They need to be buffed very significantly if they are sup
Rook is good, but not as OP as some of you people seem to think. The main nerfs that i think are needed areminor decrease of dmg on hammer smash Change God Strength to 50/75/100/125% dmg increaase Increase the cooldown on boulder Increase the mana cost of boulder Apart from that he's pretty much fine.
I had to laugh a little, because those are major freaking nerfs. Getting the base +damage coefficient nerfed from 200%>125% alone

Well, the Rooks towers are obviously not even as potent as the stock towers even at this early stage, and thats certainly for the best. I'll agree that the pacing does feel a tad off at the very beginning of the game though, as Towers are barely an detriment to attack and once the Catapulters come out even the significantly more formidable forts go down FAST. Now, I understand that this was to some degree a decision made by the designers, that once the catapult beasts enter the field you are

Yea, I just don't think the game would feel "right" without some form of item upgrade system. It certainly doesn't have to be as unintuitive and require as much encyclopedic knowledge as DoTA's, though.

Of course the question as to whether or not the creeps are sufficiently powerful is an important one. The Rooks big advantage here is that even at level 1 he can clear an entire lane of enemies about as swiftly as a level 20 hero in DoTA, and I can see how that might be a bit jarring. His basic attacks having an AoE effect might certainly be problematic, especially once generals are brought into the equation. I think the general consensus is that the creeps should generally be a bit more powe

Yea, I think anyone who has played the Rook with two cooldown reducing items realizes that Stunning is going to be a dealbreaker come competitive tournament play. Fortunately as the OP noted, we already have a perfectly respectable solution to steal for this from WoW, who after years of fiddling around with mechanics like Stun and Fear (mechanics that cause character control loss, which turns out to be not be all that fun) discovered the full joys of not just diminishing returns but also

I realize this isn't a gameplay beta, but there are a few issues that I really feel the need to discuss. First off let me say that the game looks great, and runs very nicely for me. Knowing that this game is based off DoTA, there are a couple of issues that should be discussed right off the bat. 1) Because DoTA used the WC3 engine to run, there was a passive "aggro" radius around your character where you would move a few steps to get within range of nearby creeps and enemy heroes. I c

The lack of structures isn't just a balance thing for me, it's also a fun-factor issue. Having no decisions to make except for what techs to research and where to send your colony ships for such a long period is just boring. I realize that they were probably designed with the idea that tech-trading would be enabled, and forced to use cheap factories/buildings of other races early on because they come from the future and don't know how to adapt their old technology to the new environment. Still,

Large Galaxy Size, 4 Challenging Random Opponents, tech-trading disabled: My last two games of TA (after not noticing anything particularly out of the ordinary as far as the AI is concerned), I noticed a few strange things: 1) Terran AI did not research any weapons technology, however, even though they did not show on the military graph, in the Foreign Relations display they were listed as "Strongest Military". The AI did not attack them, including a Drengin AI who had been par

Unfortunately the Espionage ability only increases how much you can spend on Spies, as far as I can tell it does nothing to increase your chances of stealing a tech, give any sort of resistance to being nullified, or reduce the cost of spies in any way. Honestly, even if Espionage did all 3 of those things it would be hard to justify putting starting points into. Poor Iconians.

Yea, I definitely don't know Brad or any of these people at Stardock, but they are in the "Blizzard" category for me. That category includes Stardock and Blizzard. It's not a big category. As someone who has pre-ordered TA, I don't care when you release it. I want it to be as good as it possibly can be before it comes out! While TA is a totally revolutionary expansion pack for any game, in any genre, I will still say that I'd like the unique tech trees to get a little more "unique", and

"Ok. Pop quiz: Which would you rather have, +5% bonus to research or Creativity? Yeah. Thought so." This is the biggest balance problem in the game right now. Anyone playing to win is going to Max Econ/Morale every time. Sadly, even if +20% econ was 10 points, it would still be chosen every time. The way the games entire economy is designed simply makes any points put into direct money (econ/morale) more valuable than anything else.

Does this mean Stardock has a New Year's present for us? Interesting backstory... I hope we get to hear a little more about the Thalan (who are my favorites!) soon. The next TA beta can't come soon enough for me!

11 Replies 56,026 Views

LOL, yea, I recall not particularly liking the game just at first either, and then I figured out how to work the economy and now I can't get enough. =)

I agree with the premise that some races are better than others but look at the simple truth behind this entire post that no-one ever seems to address. You are an idiot if you don't max out Econ bonus on any race. Most races (Krynn possibly an exception but you could still make the argument for) should max out Morale bonus. How is this an interesting design decision? These bonuses obviously cost too few points, because anyone who wants to win or get a good metaverse score i

Yea, I couldn't have put it better myself. Unless you focus very early on towards getting that +50% econ building, you are totally shafted. Even then, the insane maintenence on all your colonies is gonna leave you with very few choices. While the Iconians are really different and cool, playing as them is basically like playing hard-mode. Considering this is a single player only game, I suppose that might be the intent, but it seems a bit out of whack at the moment :)
