That really stinks. I don't think you are over reacting at all. Pictures are captured memories you can never get back; that is why people are so sentimental with them. Sounds like you have a hobby of this, so make the most out of the situation and let this be am excuse to go crazy with taking new pictures! Your son looks like he is happy to have them taken! Our cat Lilo does the same thing with boxes, bags, you name it. Actually fitting in it is not even a requirement! As long as she can get a limb or two in it, she's happy.
