I have the same problem, Bruce. I have tried everything I can think of, but no luck making the icon background transparent again!! I use XP, Home Ed. and can create new user accounts, all of which have the transparent icon background, so suspect I have changed a setting in Stardock or WinCustomize or Desktop X, and forgot what and where. Right click in any blank space on your desktop. On the pop-up menu, select "arrange icons by", and another mini-menu slides out. On that menu, make sure you do NOT have 'auto arrange' checked. If you do, uncheck it and the problem should be solved. Good luck
