Black Worm?!

I just got this email...
ZoneAlarm® Antivirus will protect you against the BlackWorm (MyWife.d) scheduled to attack this Friday, Feb. 3, 2006

Severity: High Risk

BlackWorm is a new and potentially destructive Internet worm currently making its way around the globe. It is infecting users via e-mail and is scheduled to destroy all Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, PSD and ZIP files on Feb. 3.

Here is a link I found about it. It looks rather nasty.Link

I've heard of it. And yes, it's bad. But no, I'm not concerned.

Make sure your anti-virii software is up-to-date and don't open attachments from anyone unless you know they are legit. In my family we make sure to refer to some piece of semi-private information to verify that the attachment was sent by a real person. And if an attachment comes from a friend or co-worker without some kind on authentication data, I reply back to verify.

Google search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=blackworm

I think this site had the best info: http://isc.sans.org/diary.php?storyid=1067

Dont forget about the Kama Sutra Worm thats also supposed to destroy us all tommorrow, LoL.. (May be the same as the Black Worm, I have only slightly paid attention, LoL)

You can tell I am real concerned...

Sometimes I wonder if AV companies develop these nasty little progs just to sell more of their product... I mean really, if there werent anything to worry about who would need Nortons, or pro versions of Zone Alarm with Antivirus for an incredible low price of 19.95 to upgrade..

Back-up, Back-Up and dont forget to Back-up, Even if you dont get attacked by the big bad worm it still pays to have back-ups!!

Kama Sutra Worm

Same worm.

Back-up, Back-Up and dont forget to Back-up,

Always good advice. And store one back-up off site. Mail the DVD to your mom or sister in a city far away. And if you don't want your mom to see your files . . check out TrueCrypt, very cool security. http://www.truecrypt.org/ [not affiliated, just a user]

As Zubaz says, it's the same.
This is addressed in the Eset blog http://www.eset.com/support/blog.php

Anti-virus companies have over a dozen different names for the same worm so the charges of name mangling could be leveled against the AV industry as well. That said, with names like VB.NEI, W32/Small.KI, Win32.Worm.P2P.ABM, and W32.Blackmal.E@mm you can’t blame the AV industry for choosing virus names based upon lust for attention. I’m not sure about one vendor calling it Mywife.d@MM. I’m guessing the next one will be MyExWife.A, Alimony.A@MM, or EvilLawyer.zz@mm. At least it isn’t a worm called MyDog.d@MM, in which case the services of a veterinarian would be in order.

Norton *IS* a virus.

Or worse......

I sent myself 2 yesterday and made myself the Brazilian lottery winner. Last month was Spain and the Netherlands. I think I'll win the Polish lottery next month.
