early game, i've just researched mini balls(they're the least space conserving) and i have ion drive. i slap an ion drive and a miniballs onto a small hull, all told costs 70 whatever that number means. i then later research mass driver IV, 4dmg pts to the minibals paltry 1 pt, so i upgrade the design, now costing 135 i think, but then the computer wants to charge me 80,000+ to upgrade 23 ships that are all stationed on planets!! WTH? i noe that a lot has been done in the gamma, is this one of the solved probelms?

If you just want to upgrade for new ships just click cancel and the new design will be good for future builds.

The 80Gs sounds too high to upgrade 23 ships so there must be a glitch there. Even 8K sounds too high for the upgrade you are talking about unless they want it to be prohibitive.

After the redesign try upgrading one ship and see what the cost will be.

I don't have the exact quote to put here, but this issue was addressed with the devs. I'm sure it was and has been tweaked, it's meant to be expensive but not to the point of wiping entire treasury. Wouldn't be better off to just produce those ships new ? Maybe only upgrade those veteran ships (ships who have levelled up a time or two in combat ) while the others are scrapped..

The cost for upgrades was significantly reduced, however, given the nature of the beast, there is labor, material, maintenance, crew costs, sewage, electrical, water, drydocking fees, specialist fees, increased security due to vulnerability... yada yada yada...

All those make the cost and time of upgrading more than simply slapping a new engine and a sparkly new Straykat Aerospace Projectile Gun in place on new ships. I concur with the overall thread though being that upgrades simply cost to much in Beta to be worth while unless you have gobs of green backs floating around and live to simulate stimulating the economy. (try saying that three times fast... simulate stimulating.... heheheh)

Upgrading is too expensive in Beta 5; Brad said the cost was reduced in the gamma but by how much? It would be nice if the upgraded ships were automatically renamed to reflect the change in their design.
