Ultimatums?

Why can't i deliver ultimatums eh? at least in GC1(and i assume in GC2) if i was making a obvious cultural subversion attempt (eg a starbase) they would flat out say that i would either give therm the starbase or they would declare war on me. my thing is this, i have about 3/4 of the galctic power bar (i assume thats what the thing to the left of the graph is) i have an atronomically high military, yet when i send a tiny demand to a race, they give me crap on being interstellar beings when i was still a cave man. yet when i go to war with them and sue for peace they are more than willing to part with 5, yes five, planets as well as all their IP's and $$.

i'm just saying that they should cave in that easily without me declaring war on them. Appease me damnit!

Sometimes they do. I've demanded money from a minor and had them hand it over.

I think he's talking about demanding from a major.

I agree there should be more willingness on the part of the other majors to accept the inevidable and mainly we should have the ability to do to them what they can do to us.

Actually I've demanded money from a major, too. I had a huge miiltary advantage at the time, and he said he'd help me out just this once ...

I don't usually demand money. But there have been times when I am clearly the winner, I'm so powerful that the comparison against "Top Players" has me at minimum 3:1 in everything.

Yet, when I demand that one race stops attacking another they tell me to piss off. I can't even begin to understand why such a simple request would be met with such a race dooming response. I ofcourse crush them, and even their allies don't dare help them when I declare war. After the war starts they're very cooperative. I would rather not have taken their planet and destroyed their military base before they listened to a simple peace plan.

I also noticed that despite the "No more sweetheart deals" AI change, the Drengin kept offering me "Advanced Propulsion" for "Ion Drives" (like I would ever accept a prereq that I no longer needed!).

I refused, of course.

Then I tested them, and tried to offer them Ion Drives for Advanced Propulsion. ...as expected, they asked me if I had been drinking, and even +500 BC wouldn't change their minds.

So, sweetheart deals are still in effect, and AIs will virtually never agree to something they want unless it was their idea.

A simple "Give X/Do Y or else I will immediately declare war" option somewhere in the diplomacy screen would really hit the spot. That would let the AI know you are dead serious and perhaps keep them from pissing off players and digging an early grave for themselves.
