Sluggish performance after installing Object Desktop

Hi

I purchased Stardock last night , as I was intersted in some of its applications . Anywho , after installing and downloading the various mods, I tried applying a few different themes but I recieved various error messages and prompts to load extra software etc. I spent about 2 hrs mucking about with it and eventualyl managed to get a theme applied using the Theme Manager.

I was working away as usual and i noticed, my PC was a bit slower or more sluggish than before. For example , using Photoshop, opening menus and screens seemed slower than usual .

So I decided to uninstall Object Deskop and see if it was that , but even after uninstalling it , my system appears sluggish . Even minimizing or maximizing a window seems sluggish. Any ideas ?

My spec is

P4 2.8GHZ
1.5GB Ram
ATI X800 XT PE
160GB Sata HDD

Thanks

Martin

So then maybe you did something else that triggered it.

Try System Restore.

Object Desktop includes around 30 programs. Which apps did you install? How did you uninstall them?

You should check your Windows Page File and make sure it’s at least 3x you’re RAM.
And for PhotoShop check your Scratch Disk setting…..make sure it’s not set to startup.
Maybe this will help.

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

System Restore is disabled , as it should always be .

I installed Windows Blinds, Object Dock, loginmanager (?) CursorXP, Iconmanager etc. Not that many, about 7 or 8 of the available programs.

I uninstalled everything via ADD/REMOVE programs . I noticed even after doing this , it left some behind like the Desktop Gadgets etc .

My PAGE file is set to 2048MB which is what windows recomends , I never had an issue with his before installing Object Desktop.

Dunno, everything just seems sluggish . slower than usual . I havent intsalled anything else , and I am pretty competant on XP so I didnt do anything wrong .

Thanks

Isn't there something else about needing to disable the native Windows Theme Service? Somebody? Bueller?

No, you don't 'need' to disable the themes service, but many of us do......

btw...... what the heck does Bueller mean?

Correctly recalled...and the quote is from Ben Stein as the teacher of the class, "Somebody, anybody?" and then he would just continue on even though there was no chance of any of the students attempting to answer the question.

Well thanks for the er, film tips.

I think I know what is doing it tho, ObjectDock seems to be making some applications sluggish. For example when ObjectDock is running and I am using PhotoShop , opening a toolbar window in Photoshop takes 3-4 seconds. With ObjectDock closed , it takes about 1 second to open the same toolbar window .

If anyone knows why this is happening , let me know please.

thanks

Finally comment #4 is visible......

ObjectDock, LogonStudio, CursorXP, are not part of Object Desktop...

I uninstalled everything via ADD/REMOVE programs . I noticed even after doing this , it left some behind like the Desktop Gadgets etc .
You should have uninstalled via Stardock Central. But you mentioned Theme Manager..... I have never used that, so if that caused any of the grief I don't know what to advise.

Do you have any Docklets running? Some docklets will cause this. Remove them one at a time, until you've found the culprit.

Hi, yeah I have whatever comes as standard, Clock, Weather, Calender, Web Search and Simple Animation docklet. I will try removing them and see if it makes a difference.

thanks

OK tried that and it made no difference. I also noticed when I loaded a DesktopX theme , it produced the same sluggish effect . I dont know if its machine specific , or if its down to some other app running on my machine at the same time . But its annoying when something takes 4 seconds longer to open , especially when your using it all day long .

OK.. not a docklet problem, does unloading ObjectDock help?

A particular theme, or any DX theme?

Sometimes transparency can hit a system hard if the vid drivers aren't the latest.

Also make sure all the vid card alphablending & acceleration features are enabled.

If the system can't see these features enabled in hardware it will try and do it in software and bog down your machine.
