King of the Mountain

Remember when we were kids and we played king of the mountain,
We’d fight our way to the top pushin’ and shoutin’
The stronger kids always won,
But we still all thought it was fun.
When we were tired bruised and done.

Now here’s the scenario,
As the middle class begins their climb,
They can’t see that the upper class has been on top the whole damn time.
You don’t need a scoreboard to see where you stand,
The rich didn’t climb, they were on top before the game began.
We no longer do this for thrills,
The poor can’t even make it up the fucking foot hills.
Being a saint will just make you tired.
Didn’t I tell you that being an asshole is basically required.
Okay I lied I suppose the rich did climb to the top,
On the backs of their slaves, and by stacking every sweatshop.
The curse gets worse,
While the poor grow weak and watch their children die,
The mountain grows and higher and higher into the sky.

The only way to get people to act in a desired fashion,
The only way to invoke a proper reaction,
Is to use money motivate,
What a beautiful world we could create,
If everyone would accept their fate.

As what a pon,
A pon to be ordered around,
To be lost and never be found.
Why the fuck should anyone deserve to wear the crown.
At this point I decided it would be best to sit down.

No one is being ordered,
Everyone chooses the market cause they know other options are crazy,
It can provide a better life for those who aren’t so damn lazy.
We accept the market because it gives us what we want,
It’s not as if it’s a mechanism simply created to taunt.

Wait a minute,
Market potential, and market reality are two different things,
Everything I desire, the market brings?
I want peace I want justice, when will the market give me these,
I haven’t found them under 21 years of Christmas trees.
The market has the power to feed the hungry and give strength to the weak,
But the market only benefits those on the top peak.
I have another image to provide.
We dangle food in front of animals to keep them satisfied,
And what does the market teach?
Dangle the American dream in front of people but always keep it just out of reach.

As for poetry, it isn't the best. As for philosophy, you describe things as they are. Capitalism can only provide for economics. It does nothing for the important things in life such as freedom, justice, and peace.

WooHoo, you know I like this one!! :) I like the way you did two voices.
My oldest brother wrote something for my daughter that I'd very much like for you to read. It's called "Why Were You Born Little Something"
and I posted it in January.

I'm agreeing with Sherye... the rhyming only detracted, really, and the metre was pretty much non-existant... but the idea was excellent.

Thanks for reading guys...it actually was originally composed as a "rhyme" not as a poem. It was based off of an actual conversation I had with someone where I used king of the mountain as an anology.

WF - I will give that post a look right now.

Ted, being an avid reader of your rhymes in a past life, I know how to read them, and I thought this was one of your tops.

Pretend it's a rap. That'll help it flow.

I've heard from many people having me read them makes a lot more sense and works can be much more put together than they appear...though it is nice to hear some honest criticism though...for real.
Well time for a trip over to fillintheblank.joeuser.com

Peace

You better believe you do owe me that cash...or at least a pint of tugboat stout.
