Knock Around Guy

He was .........

There is a saying in New York City, from the streets. Having a reputation as a stand-up guy, someone that "had your back"
was the highest compliment you could give.

Knock around guy was one of these guys, someone you could always count on in a street war, A guy that wore the scars of battle proudly, the busted nose, the scar tissue build up around his eyebrows, these markers shouted to the world "do not fuck with this guy" tread at your own peril. The knuckles of his huge hands scared and calloused from his many combats.

For a living this guy use to "bounce" although most of the time a simple word form knock-around was enough to defuse most situations with no violence.

Knock-around had a secret, a secret he shared with no one. He wanted to be At peace, with himself and the world at large.

Knock-around was a ladies man, for some reason ladies seemed to be drawn to knock-around, it sure was not his looks, he was by no means a pretty boy, something he scorned by the way. Maybe it was in a city filled with so much violence, they felt safe with him at there side.

He fought most of his life, from the age of 15 on all he could remember was endless combats, endless visits to the doctors, till he learned to repair his own body, he has skill with a suturing needle and catgut, he got so good at sewing himself up soon you could not tell the difference from his work and the doctors, he took pride in this.

By the time he was 22 he was known in all 5 boros as someone to be reckoned with, He relished the fear in men's eyes as they saw him and the looks of lust from the women's faces.

One night while walking on park ave. between 122nd street and 123rd street someone put four bullets in knock-arounds back, he died the way he lived, violently.

His last thought before the black came was "peace at last" then he expired. some constructive criticism is most welcomed, otherwise please behave, I am in a MOOD today.

MM,

Wow that is quite a story. I guess maybe knock around was born in the wrong century. An earlier century may have seen him a skilled knight, or military man.

I used to be a pretty physical gal, in highschool. I was always quick to lift my fists because it always made me feel so much better to knock the crap out of someone than to argue. I wasn't a large girl but athletic and I went to 5 diff highschools. It always seemed like the tuff girls would have to "try" me at my new school. They'd always approach me in a group and feel me out. I learned right off that I had to catch each one of them alone, and beat the shit out of her, so no one else would mess with me. It worked EVERY time. Usually once I got the head girl beat I was good.

All that to say this. A friend told me something in highschool I've never forgotten and it seems like it applies here. She said, "If you keep on. One day we will find your body in the gutter probably with a slit throat."

That was her modern day version of, "He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword."

It's too bad the cowards who shot knock around in THE BACK, couldn't meet him on his own terms. Guns are what cowards use when they are too weak to take a beating....

Glad to see you outgrew it.  The world would have been a very poor place without you.

I'm your knock-around broad, Elie, at least on the 'net.

And no-one's gonna shoot me in the back, although I have pulled a few knives out.

this I know sabrina, and no one knows better than I how you have my cyberback. thanx.

Knock around guy seemed to have been a great guy to have as a friend. He's all macho and yet a sweetheart at the same time. He would definately be a character I would enjoy reading more about or watching on television. Nice Elie. Too bad he died so quickly.

interesting story, MM

Ever read any Anthony Bourdain books? If you haven't I suggest you read "The Bobby Gold Stories". You may like it. It's a quick, fun and interesting read. It's about a New York knock around guy.

Been sitting here after reading and reading all the comments. I find that I am almost at a loss as to what to say, as it has sprung up in me too many emotions. Then, it hits me. Here was knockaround. Feared. loved by the ladies. Taking great pride in who he had become. He lived , and others felt safe around him. He had ladies for the taking. Those who were a friend knew he had their backs. He walked without fear, as he was feared. Yet, dispite his ability to fend for himself from the time he was young, when the cowardly act happened, his last thoughts were "peace at last." It strikes me, how hurting knockaround was inside and no one seem to know this. I wonder if anyone of the people he friended, and made feel safe saw this in his eyes. I suspect not. knockaround would have shown no fear. not on the street, and not in a one to one conversation. It overwhelms me to think of knockaround, underneath all that he was just wanted peace. HE JUST WANTED PEACE. MAY PEACE FIND YOU KNOCKAROUND.
