disk check and objectdock

sorry my memory isn't very good

i installed some stuff like samurize, anyways so it said to reboot so i did then it insisted in doing a s ystem check
i didnt even notice so i di dnt stop it, so it was scanning then it said stuff like "the following files are something (i think corrupt) and it was naming stuff from objectdock, like "current theme.ini" or watever
so when it was done it asked like "do u want to save a chain to these files" i didnt know what it meant but it didnt let me decide it went to the login screen
so i logged in, and my objectdock is back at default settings and stuff and all my icons are gone >_>

so i wanna kno wwhy this happens and i dont want it to happen again

robdude123,

Are all your icons gone from the "C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Images" folder, or is it just the current theme you had set-up that is gone from the desktop?

If your icons are still in the "C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Images" folder, then it sounds like disk check removed the cache for whatever reason.

It sounds to me (based on the limited information), like the Samurize installation conflicted with something when Windows tried to save settings, and therefore "chkdsk" was invoked.

If you had ObjectDock loaded during the installation procedure for Samurize, I would say that you simply need to unload all programs except your anti-virus and firewall during any install to prevent any issues - this is standard practice for installing software.

lol that might explain it, i was using GANT icons and custom settings it was removing them

it was removing stuff from "documents and settings/myname/xxxxxxx.ini" replace xx with random stuff like "current_theme.ini"

so to stop this from happening again just dont isntall anythign with objectdock open?

is there a way to back up my current settings/the icons i have and what programs are in it?

The cache files (CurrentTheme.ini, AppImages.ini, and Settings.ini) are located at "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\ObjectDock".

You can read my tutorial on "Backing Up Skins and Themes" as well as "Working with ObjectDock" for some basics on backing up.

You will be backing up the following for ObjectDock:

- Backgrounds
- Images
- Themes
- Docklets
- Any image folders you created in the sub-directory

You can either backup each folder listed above(which will include all prepackaged files, as well as files installed by you), or just backup the folders inside for the items you installed after installing the program.

Just click my name, and you will see a list of mini tutorials I wrote displayed on my page.

Have fun.

it's usually best to post a new, if the problem is different. usually after a problem is resolved, people tend to not look.

When you save a theme, there is a theme ("ini") file created, and the current settings are also created in cache when you exit Windows.

If you look in the "Themes" folder, you will see the theme configuration files (".ini") that you have saved, as well as the "default" theme file.

When you save a theme using the Dock Setting > General category > Save theme as.. button - ObjectDock creates one of these "Theme" files. It records the background, icons, docklets, and settings of your dock theme, based on the current location of the source files in the ObjectDock sub-directory.

Basically, this means that when you back-up files, you want to include all the files used by the theme - as well as knowing which folder each is in, so that the theme will work when restored from backup.

I have found that backing up the contents of the following folders is safe for all purposes:

Backgrounds folder
Images folder
Themes folder
Docklets folder
Any custom image folders (these folders can be saved as the complete folder, and not just the contents)

Then, when I restore, I select the contents of one of these folder backups and copy them to the relevant folder (i.e., select content of "Backgrounds backup" folder and copy to "C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock\Backgrounds" folder). Windows will ask if I want to copy over files that already exist, which I always say "no" to - because the clean install has the most recent prepackaged files.

Note - for custom image folders, I just copy the complete folder (not just the contents) to "C:\Program Files\Stardock\ObjectDock" folder. This is due to the fact that I created them, so the folders will not be installed by the ObjectDock installer file.

These are just basics, and as you get aquainted with the program, you may just save specific images, backgrounds, docklets, and themes to have for restoration.

I hope this was reasonably clear.

For your other problem, it would be best to create a new post, so that others may see it to help - I am just one of many people here willing to help.
