Using XP Built In Tools 101

A mini tutorial for beginners

Using XP Built In Tools 101

This mini tutorial will walk through the use of two built in functions of Windows XP that can be very handy, and that may be overlooked. As is my usual format, I will try to keep text minimized where possible, and use images when possible, for efficiency and brevity.

We will look at using the built in Font Manager to install fonts, and the built in recording applet for burning data to CD.

INSTALLING FONTS

STEP #1 – Click the Start button > click Control Panel > click the Appearance and Themes category > click the Fonts link as indicated in the image below.

STEP #2 – Click the File menu > select “Install New Font…” as shown in the image below.

STEP #3 – Use the Add Font dialog box to select a drive in the Drives pane > select the folder containing the fonts you want to add in the Folders pane > the font manager will load the fonts into the “List of fonts:” pane > use the Select All button, or select individual fonts > click “OK” as shown in the image below.

Note – this method allows the font manager to recognize the fonts, which removes the possibility of placing invalid fonts directly into the Font sub-directory.

RECORDING USING XP PACKET WRITING APPLET

STEP #1 – Click the Start button > click My Computer > Right-click your CD Writer drive icon > select Properties > click the Recording tab > place a check mark in the “Enable CD recording on this drive” > select your speed in the drop-down list as needed, or just use the default “Fastest” option > click “Apply” as shown in the image below.

STEP #2 – Click the Start button > click My Computer > open the folder containing the files you want to burn to CD > now simply drag the files you want to burn to CD onto the CD Writer icon > you will see a pop-up balloon by the notification area – AKA as the system tray (by the clock) > click this balloon to show the drive contents which will have the files ready to burn displayed with a down arrow, and will be slightly transparent > click the “Write these files to CD” link as indicated in the image below.

Now you just follow along with the CD Writing Wizard to specify a name for the CD and complete the burning process.

Because this is a packet-writing scheme, you can perform multiple writes to a single CD until it is full, if needed.

Note – make sure your files do not exceed 680 MB – 690 MB to prevent incomplete writes (each writing process includes writing a reference table to the disc which will require the use of available space depending on the number of writing sessions performed on the disc). DVD writing is not currently supported by this applet, so you will need to use your favorite DVD writing software to burn files to DVD.

I hope you find this useful. Until next time, have fun and “Keep On Customizing”.

The top line of text overlaps the next line of text making the whole thing unreadable. This should be fixed
