Photoshop drop shadow?

I made an object in paint shop with just a little transpency you almost can't see it, anyway if I use the magic wand and select the whole thing and then invert it and then apply a drop shadow it only applies it to the outer edges like what I want. When I try the same thing in photoshop it applies the drop shadow to the whole object not just the outer edges. Any way to make it only apply to the outer edges.. I like using photoshop for some things but if I can't do this simple thing with it I guess I won't use it.. Any suggestions?

Can you post a picture of what you have on here, not quite sure what you're doing. The drop shadow in photoshop works more like a real shadow in some degrees, but there's more ways to make a shadow than just that one. You can probably get what you want by using outerglow and changing the blend mode and color.

You could set the transparency of your layer to 100% but the fill to ie. 10%, then apply a drop shadow. The result will be a shadow around the edges, not through the object.

It sounds as if photoshop sees this as a 'hollow' object. As if you drew a square without fill. Put a fill in it and it should just drop the outer edges.
