Desktop theme question

First, let me apologize for asking what's gonna be a stupid question, but, I'm 62 yrs old and not very computer smart, and I'd like to use a theme and I've hit a snag. I downloaded and installed one of the "Longhorn build" ones, but now my desktop icons have disappeared. Additionally, I can't get the date and weather things to show up. I'm fairly sure my resolution has something to do with it, but, I leave it on 1024x768 because that's what I play some games (IL2FB and CoD) on. Any advice would be appreciated. Again, sorry for the not very smart question. Thank you.

Your icons are just being hidden by the program. Open desktopx (i think thats the program your using) configuration. There is a check box to show or hide desktop icons.

The date and weather thingy? Do you mean calender, that might be rainlender. If not then there is probably a switch in the theme to show the weather and date. What theme exactly are you struggling with?

I'm just kinda struggling with the whole thing. Yeah, I think what I meant to say was calendar. And, I think my resolution is the culprit. What desktop resolution do most folks here use? As I said, I leave mine on 1024x768. Thanks for the quick response. I really appreciate your help. I'll try your suggestion.

Themes are made for specific resolutions. Some are flexible but most are not. 1024 x 768 is a pretty commen res so you should have alot to choose from. Chances are the calender is a rainlender calender. You can get the program here.. http://www.ipi.fi/~rainy/index.php

Bob - could you put the link to the exact one you downloaded? Then we could look exactly at what is/isn't part of it and perhaps help a bit more.

Hope I did that correctly. Anyhow, here's the link(?) By the way, I did as recommended now my desktop icons are back. I do have one more question if you'll allow me - does using one of these themes use up any more system resources than not using one? I've always read about "low resources", never was quite sure about it, thus the question. Thank you again.

Desktop X should be using anywhere from 1% to 4% more system resources. Its virtually nothing. Sometimes an object will mess things up though. If your system is running at a high % then delete individual objects until you find the one causing problems.

the author of that particular theme is very good with helping people. Try emailing him if you have more problems.

Yes, of course it does. Any program running will use resources. A lot depends on.... What OS you're using. Processor speed. How much RAM you have installed. And some themes use more resources than others. It all sounds so very complicated right now, but stick with it, keep asking questions, read all you can find. Also if your OS is WinXP, open Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt +Del)..... on the Processes tab, you can see exactly what programs, and services are running, how much memory is being used by each, and how many CPU cycles they're using.
