And what would the theme be based on? A ship? Computer?

Copyright issues...?

Everything Star Wars is copyrighted and trade marked. Permission from LucasFilm would be required to release any skins or wallpapers using Star Wars imagery. You will find plenty of science fiction style themes here though.

So...."fan-art"-type arguments are out of the question?

If you draw your own picture of R2 D2, that's ok. That's considered fan art. But you can't take drawings or photos that belong to LucasFilm and use them without permission.

So a theme COULD be made, but it would have to be built from scratch.

Some skins are already available (by exar kun) and objects in objectdock too. Mouse curosrs in cursor XP. An old desktop theme (imperial blue with all the writings in Star wars language) also previously available (don't know if still online but was in wincustomize fall 2001 cd) Why them so if it is just a matter of copyright?

Fan fictions ? Easier to reprint by permission, right ? Some skinners do it with permission of others for their works ! Is the universe of George Lucas too-well kept to give up ? Not for everybody I think and proof is already there on this site !

Fan art is fine. YOu just have to make it yourself.  You can't just go and download a wallpaper from starswars.com and reupload it though.

The kinda work Exar Kun did on his windowblinds skins is this particular sort of things I would like to see widespread to other object desktops elements ! Bootskin, Logon Studio, Desktop (objects or themes), Iconpackager (pretty much like the "Kotor" objectdock downloadable suite, made by request) The Star Wars universe is quite large enough to call upon everybody's imagination... Why not a walking rancor on your desktop ? An animated lightsaber for objectdock ? Or a Sith temple as wallpaper ? Don't wanna see Princess Leia with her ugly hair as seen in Episode IV !!!

Fan arts ? Not only seen in Starwars.com Here is an adress for a site I am working for: www.fanwarz.com One will find some beautiful fan arts over there. It is not a matter of reprinting them. But just to have a look at those would be enough to try making it on one's own ! That's what stroke me most on Wincustomize. Fan art on Star Wars are... just so few. You like, you dislike ! Ok ! But I really expected more for skin specialists ! And I don't mean anything taken from the films !

Some of the sites dealing with Star Wars precise that there are in no way affiliated with Lucas. But they want to make something about it all the same. That's why there are millions of things in the Star Wars universe and that's why the universe is so big. George Lucas hasn't invented everything. As far as I am concerned, I have read ALL the novels and the comics and the read-along stories. I have. I am myself a fan fiction writer. I am good at this sort of things and at tuning PCs (my personal one is entirely Star Wars Empire dedicated) But I can't create skins. I don't know how to make it. So what ? That's why I chose Wincustomize. But I feel rather disappointed when I realize for instance that a single entire suite is yet available. With so million people contributing to the expansion of the universe, with their own means, I will never accept the idea that Object Desktop could be excluded from it.

Exar Kun, if you read this: thanks for what you have created on your Star Wars-based windowblinds skins. I have downloaded them all. A very great job, particularly the Sith one. Keep on the Dark Side ! May it be with you still for long !

Just wanted to point out that there are LOTS of copyrighted images embedded in many skins on this site.. >

Skinner Kona0197 is perfectly right ! Some of them are even specialists in it (skins factory for instance)What are the other so afraid of ?
The Skins Factory is an outfit that gets paid to do those skins for the specific company. Their skins are essentially paid advertising.

http://www.utsystem.edu/ogc/intellectualproperty/copypol2.htm#test this is a good article on trying to determine fair use. Using it I would weigh on the side of caution of protecting the owner of the copyrighted material and still seek permission where at all possible.
