Lavasoft has made a VX2 cleaner plugin.  VX2 is an especially difficult piece of malware and it is advisable for you to have the tool already on your computer before  you are exosed to the pest.  You can read about it and download it here:  http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/plugins/vx2cleaner.shtml

from lavasoft:
This VX2 variant registers itself in a way, which gives it system privileges. It also prevents the user from viewing this information by removing the user’s rights to do so. Furthermore it constantly monitors the registry and prevents any attempts to remove its associated values. This makes it very difficult for the user to manually remove it.

I think that is  horrible!

quick browse-by...

*everyone* should have an active registry monitor running upon boot up to monitor registry changes which allows one to say yes or no to registry changes.

this is first line computer defense, along with a few other simple things which will allow one to pretty much do the net without worry.

Thanks for the headsup GM! Just ran it, phew! Clean.

Question, could someone explain what Ad-Watch is/does? I have the Pro version and don't know what Ad-Watch is. Is it something that runs "behind-the-scenes"? I tried to use it but it kept popping up with things I couldn't understand.

Ad-Watch monitors your registry for changes and notifies you when a program tries to modify any of the hives it is watching. Pretty much what IP is advocating everyone should have on their machine..

I figure even if I never used it myself, one day someone would show up in a world of trouble and maybe I could help them with it.  I use winpatrol and firewall and usually one pops up with changes to registry, start menu, host files...  I just don't trust that it will always work every time.
