Features for WinCustomize V4 Suggestion Thread

Features for WinCustomize V4 Suggestion Thread

We're getting close to starting on re-creating WinCustomize.

Here are some basic features we want:

Users will have their own domain: User.WinCustomize.com

Their account will include things like their skin gallery, recommended skins, posts they've participated in, Skinner Groups, etc.

The main site itself will be streamlined in one way but expanded in another. Streamined in that there will only be two columns instead of 3 and less "Stuff" on the main page.  Expanded in that there will be multiple page modes. For instance, the top authors and skins will be on the "Most Popular" tab and have vastly more information and details on the top skinners and top submissions so that more people get highlighted and the most popular authors get more kudos.

Speaking of kudos, whenever someone posts or responds or is present in any way, the various awards they've won on the site and other distinctions will show up. So if you have  a featured skin, you'll get a little 16x16 medal for that. Get the most popular skin for the day, same thing, reach a certain milestone in downloads get another and so forth.

People who help others will be able to be highlighted more by admins by getting special tags by them showing that this is a "super user". This is a step beyond the regular access levels we already have.

The forums will be vastly expanded and yet kept very simple. It will function much like the JoeUser forum here. It won't LOOK like that at all. The functionality is key though as it will be different than other sites. Each higher level is a superset of the content of the more specific levels. For example, the "General" forum will have the newest articles listed from all the sub-forums. As you click on sub-forums, the topics get more specific. So if you JUST want to talk about wallpapers, no problem, you can go to the wallpaper forum. But those popular topics will also show up in their parent forums and so on.  This is the opposite of the way most forums work on most forums, sub-forums are largely useless and empty because what you post there is read by few people.

The whole site will be recoded in ASP.NET and be vastly faster than what we have today.

There will be a lot more admin and moderator tools to police. Right now we're kind of stuck with having to kick someone out entirely  with no in-between ways of warning people.

One of the tabs will be dedicated towards the software used to customize the desktop.

One of the tabs will be dedicated towards tutorials on creating stuff for the different sections.

The purchasing of premium skins and themes and suites will be much more integrated into the site and top authors will have a streamlined way of being able to offer the occasional premium skin.  But to be able to qualify for submitting premium (i.e. non free) content you have to have already contributed a lot of free content (i.e. we don't want skinning to end up a paid thing but we want authors to have a way of being able to justify their rather time consuming hobby and be able to afford new hardware and software).

WC subscribers will have a host of special features only available to them such as on-site blogging, integration into JoeUser.com onto their site, skin recommendations, and other goodies. One goody of interest is that articles on skinning, a kind of "live magazine" will be able to be done. Subscribers will be able to submit the the live WC Magazine (one of the tabs) so that others can read thoughts on skinning. Admins will still be able to moderate this to determine whether a given article is "featured" on WC Mag live as opposed to listed.

The rating system will be totally overhauled. Instead, ratings will be weighted by access level. The higher your access, the more weight your rating caries. It will be on a star system also (1 through 5 stars) instead of a point system since more people are familiar with that. Existing ratings will be modified to fit this (we track who rates what so the weighting system can be retroactively applied).

The most popular page, btw, will be tracking skins based on most popular for the MONTH, WEEK, as well as day. The Weekly most popular will be the one most highlighted instead of the daily one.

So those are some of our ideas.  Are there any features not mentioned here that you would like to see?

Maybe some of this has been posted before, but here is what I would like to see.

The site be more friendly to other browswers such as firefox.

I would like to see a more "modern" type forum.

A request section in the forums where people can leave requests instead of leaving them in your comments area.

I think the messageboard forum could be cooler, but I am not sure if the coolness I am thinking about would work here.

Messageboard games!!! Stardock makes games, so why not a mini-game on the messageboard where you invite someone on-line already and play against them.

Anyway, the real reason for my post:
Just a thought:

I think TextBanners is a good idea and should be one of the things WinCustomize Version 4 should have. You can post your ad on the message board pages to alert someone about whatever. it could be a sign saying I love you, or a new skin to be sold. maybe just a link to your favorite website or something your selling on eBay.

That, with a mixture of other professional ad uses, I thing having TextBanners.net as part of the new development would be really cool. WinCustomize subscribers would get free impressions, bloggers get a post on the banner, news articles get more hilights... comments on a featured skin could be shown there, news developments, skins being developed and the author is asking for help... stuff like that.

TextBanners can be the communities text ad source.
So what do you think???

I think another thing like being able to show/hide different column sections like options and community in a +/- thing like Windows uses.
Oh, and I forgot::: the icons of different sections need to be updated, like WB's and WMP's.

We definatly need a programmers forum for EACH APPLICATION so you can report bugs....

I am ready to see the fruit of your labors. I link to Wincustomize everyday this past week hoping to see something different. I went ahead and DL .NET Framework support. Only if it were as easy as a push of a button. huh?

A noticed in a news item that Frogboy mentioned that W2K5 is coming soon for subscribers My question is how is what is coming the same/different than the free personal WC skinning site I noticed that is now being offered? Is this how we go about setting up to use W2K5 vs. the current version of WC? Thanks

I'm lost.

I realize its probably too late to implement any new features, but I had an idea or two nonetheless...

How about another statistic (to go in the 'download info' pop-up window) that tells you the 'rank' of that particular skin vs.the rest of the skins in that category. (ie, windowblind xyz has 10,000 d/loads, and there are 20 other windowblinds that have more downloads than that, so skin xyz would have a ranking of 21)

Another idea...

Perhaps another little stat that shows your ratio of uploaded skins to total downloads...

Say, if you have 1 million d/loads, and only one uploaded piece, that should count as something (skinner award perhaps), whereas 1mil uploads with a total of 1mil d/loads would not.

Maybe there could be a ranking for this as well/instead...Like average downloads per piece. Persons with the higher averages would get higher rankings etc...

...And to smooth out the system a little, put a minimum of 5 uploads in order to be 'accounted for' ...Otherwise someone with just 1 good upload could shoot to the top of the list...

Create an actual Forum. It would make the WC community much much more closer and bigger. As well as a nicer GUI for the website. If this site get's a forum it will grow. No doubt.

Hiya....I don't know if anyone is still looking at this thread, but I'd like to see more detailed info in the Stats tab.....similar to what I get when I look at my Stats over at Skinartistry. It's the rankings stuff that would be nice addition.

http://www.skinartistry.com/authorstats.php You can bring up a general site stat and if you click on an artist's name http://www.skinartistry.com/authorstats.php?author=essencay you can bring up his/her stats showing each individual skin he/she has uploaded.

I think this ones pretty much dead, essencay...

Maybe it's time it became "unsticky" perhaps?

It would be nice (since some of use are still using 56k modems) to have a resume feature when you get interupted downloading. Also when you purchase a CD such as the "Orion Icon Premium Suite" and then it shows up as available in Stardock Central you should be able to just load it from CD rather then re-downloading to make it show up as "Installed"
I hope this post makes sense.

Frogboy:

2 things I see that I hope get fixed on the new site.

1. On the old WC site when you click on your skins the site shows you how many TOTAL downloads you have from ALL skins. The new WC site does not. Any way to add this? I sure would like to know when I hit 200,000 downloads without having to add stuff up.

2. How will we upload on the new site?

I don't know how hard it would be but ... is there any way to make it so each skinner could skin their personal site via an HTML editor or something. Kinda like Angelfire or Geocities. I think that would be great if skinners could show their talent right on their home pages.
1.

It tells you the *total* total right above the subtotals.

2.

There is an upload link at the top of every library.
I meant GRAND total for all downloads on all of my skins put together...
