Whats up with Deviant?

Everytime I try to go to Deviant Art, I get an ad and it won't let me in unless I click on a button...which I refuse to do. I will not be using this site unless they correct this.

Have you hit the "No Thanks" button?
No, and I won't as I refuse to respond to an ad. I don't trust ads and I think this is over the top instrusive.

*sigh* Try hitting the link under the community menu down and to the left. If that doesnt work then that means you only have to hit "No Thanks" once, and then it will go away.

Wah, gimme, gimme, gimme. I want everything for free. I don't care what you have to do to try to make money. I don't want to do anything. I don't care about your problems. Just gimme, gimme, gimme. I don't even want to press a no thanks button. Forget the politeness, just gimme, gimme, gimme. If you don't gimme, gimme, gimme, I won't visit your site anymore. Wah.... (No names mentioned)

Chas, you are a very rude person. If you have nothing nice to say...shut the hell up.

Excuse me Chas, but I don't think I mentioned anything about wanting something for nothing. I am a current subscriber of Wincustomize, registered owner of Object Desktop, Winstep and an occasional subscriber of Deviant (though not currently), I also have made many skinning contributions to both sites. My concern was that I had to interact with the ad when I was not sure of where it would lead me.

All I can suggest if you're concerned regarding the kinds of ads they're running (some spyware and sleezoid products use banner and popup ads designed so that installs can be triggered by closing the popups but usually only *if* your IE browser settings are lax enough, like having ActiveX and download on demand enabled) is to use higher security settings for your browser use an ad and popup blocker (if you don't want to use another app, using the hosts file to block ads and sites also helps...there are ready made anti-ad, etc lists you can enter into your hosts file that should work) and/or email the webmaster of DevArt to see what kinds of ads they are running and express your concerns.

gillon - There's an option at the top of the home page to opt out of ads/pop-ups on their site

Deviant Art is trying to stay alive. One way is the ad you speak of. Although I do not like those types of ads, I will admit it works in Deviant Art's situation.

I would and have just click the 'no thanks' ion at the bottom of the ad and that was the end of it.

I have also noticed that the ads on Deviant Art have gotten better with a little bit more meaning. So in general I think Deviant Art is getting better.

I could've sworn I used semicolons...is the site bug eating those too now?

I keep meaning to sign up at DevArt but still haven't gotten around to it. I think the last time I looked it seemed to me that they wanted so much personal info I was surprised they didn't want a stool sample as well.

(I have nothing against the DevArt site really, I'm just a bit intimidated by the tremendous volume of work they have there. I get lost.)

I'm so pigheaded I never went back after the fight over white supremacists and nazis being allowed to post their symbols and their hateful messages.

I'm sure they haven't missed me and amazingly, I haven't missed them either

HUH?

they let the little NAZI morons run around there?

if so...

I won't use my subscriptions... either of them
and I will not be a part of funding their play ground either...

sad to say

Dave...I still in there at times....usually chasing a rip issue of some sort.....I avoid the Hitler Youth....brownshirts, etc....but always thought it would have been nice if the 'elder' Senior Members were granted some form of cost-free membership to help promote more mature interaction/guidance.....but no real biggie....not when we're busy enough here anyway....

Flame on Hus, its okay, I'm use to it here. It was a joke really to provide some insite into the message that was being sent. But, if it offended you personally, I wonder why? You noticed that I didn't use any particular name. I'm sure that you have heard a lot of people complaining about how everything should be free here. Why shouldn't everything be free here, since everything else in the world is free.(Sarcasm)

Therefore Gillion, my post wasn't directed at you. But, at the message that was being sent. If you were not another "gimme, gimme, gimme" person, then your post was easily misunderstood.

Hus, "take a chill pill" and have a little sense of humor. I won't reply to the personal attacks. This justs creates more conflict and hostility among members in the community. I won't be a part of that.

Sig101 in post #8, seems to have the answer for you, if you are concerned about security. Gillion, I'm sure that you understand that bandwidth costs money. Servers cost money, and it must be paid somehow. I don't think that Deviant would try to envade your system or compromise your security. And from what Jafo has said, there are a few citizens at WC with friendly contact with Deviant, and others here that provide helpful useful information. I think Deviant is a good outlet for artists trying to express themselves. Especially artists that haven't risen to the standards for desktop customization, mainly in wallpapers, that exists here.
It's much better than having people do bad things with their time.

Everyone knows that Americans have a strange sense of humor at times. Our sarcasm isn't understood by a lot of foreign people. But, I believe that it is our sense of humor that keeps us mentally healthy in troubled times. I can't apologize for being an American, and trying to keep a sense of humor.

Lets have a sense of humor!!! (Spiel ended, back to skinning)

Chas....gillon is one of those who has been around the scene for a squillion years.....and knows full well what it all costs, etc. [UserID 36 is a dead give-away]...

Senses of humour can often get people into strife.....I upset Stumpy one time a few months ago....and more recently Wolfn1 on IRC.....both certainly unintended...but equally both due to an even 'stranger' sense of humour that we Aussies have.

It's often crucial to clearly telegraph the humour intent...

Yeah, I've seen Aussies with a strange sense of humor too. I guess both our countries learned a lot from our associations with the British.

And I agree Jafo, about telegraphing the humor intent. I'll try to telegraph it better in the future, because one never really knows about the actual message that is being sent at times in these posts.

Only to the same extent that one could learn technology from the Luddites.

Yes, we don't hold with that new-fangled humour stuff, it will never catch on...

I usually check out the "person" I'm gonna make a smart-ass comment to. Sometimes ...I forget

Anyways It's okay to hit the "No Thanks" button.

Tiggz, I wonder what country you are from? Hmm, nevermind.
