Fences 5.81 Resets to Default after Reboot

The Default Changes if Fences is uninstalled and reinstalled

Well, It seems to be holding true that Fences holds its configuration if it is uninstalled and reinstalled and however it was configured when it was uninstalled is how it is configured when it is installed again and that become the default Desktop ScreenImage of Desktop when Fences was installed on or before 8-15-2024 Default on how Fences appeared when it was installed on or before 8-10-2024.  It adopted the configuration set by Fences 2.0 when Fences 2.0 was uninstalled and Fences 5.81 was installed.

Changes made to desktop default made after install on 8-22-2024When I tried to add a new fence to the new default Desktop on 8-22-2023

The New Desktop Default is what my desktop now reverts to after every reboot.  The desktop is not the same as the first time I installed Fences 5.81 but it inherited the Desktop image depending on how it was setup when it was uninstalled and that has become the new Default desktop screen.Desktop reverts to my desktop created on install of Fences 5.81 install 8-22-2024

Thanks for the info.  It is going to take me a while to go through all the settings but in the Meantime, I went ahead and reinstalled Fences 5.81.  And if things weren't strange enough already, they just got stranger After I reinstalled Fences 5.81. It was back to me not being able to add any icons to any fences.  I didn't try portals, but I suspect I could install icons to portals just not to Fences.   It is like when I try to drag and drop an icon in a Fence it is like the icon drops straight through the Fence and lands on a layer below the Fence.  And even though the fence is kind of see through the icon I dropped into the Fence that fell straight through disappeared under the Fence I created.  To find the icon I have to move the Fence to see the icon below it.  But that is the least of strange.  Before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 earlier today i could place icons in Fences and I could also show portals on my desktop, but they would disappear every time I rebooted.   But this time I didn't reboot before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 and reinstalled Fences 2.o and it would only work if I manually right clicked and selected "Run as Administrator".  After the comment on the Fences 2.0 could never be setup with a script I found this:  "Now we'll create a new shortcut that launches the application with Administrator privileges. Right-click the desktop (or elsewhere), point to New, and select Shortcut. Enter a command based on the following one into the box that appears: runas /user: ComputerName Administrator /savecred " C:PathToProgram.exe "".  I didn't try it because I already Fences 5.81 so this is a fall back if I go back to Fences 2.0.  But here is where it starts to get strange and then strange some more.  After I reinstalled Fences 5.81 I don't know how it happened, but it had the configuration just as I left it before I uninstalled Fences 5.81earlier today.  I couldn't believe it.  It was exactly the way I left it when I uninstalled Fences 5.81.  I still can add new icons to either new fence I create or old Fence the I created before I uninstalled Fences 5.81.  I have attached a screenshot of the Fences and Portal I built before I uninstalled Fences 5.81.  Now that is strange on top of strange.  So, in theory if I am again able to add icons to Fences like happened last time where after a while I could start adding icons to Fences and portals old and new I could build up my desktop and if the same holds true again I could then uninstall Fences 5.81 and to be safe reinstall Fences 2.0 ad then uninstall Fences 2.0 and reinstall Fences 5.81 and if the same holds true my desktop would be exactly the way I want i with all my icon in the Fences and it would be the desktop i am trying to build out to. I haven't tried that ai I currently can't add icons to any Fences currently.  But if the same thing happen like it did before after I let Fences 5.81 sit on my desktop for  a while and see if I can then start to add icons to Fences again and uninstall Fences 5.81 and reinstall Fences 5.81 and if the same holds true that happened last time the icons I want in Fences will be in Fences after I reinstall Fences 5.81 again.  But I am not going to  mess up what I have now jst to get more icon on my desktop.  And if I didn't say I also rebooted my PC atleast once since I reinstalled Fences 5.81 and for right no the icons I added to Fences before I uninstalled Fence 5.81 is staying on my desktop after a reboot  And that is the strangest thing I have seen with FencesAfter reinstall and After Reboot.

I think i posted to the forum my experiences with uninstalling Fences 5.81 and reinstall Fences 5.81 and how the changes I made before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 stuck to my desktop after I reinstalled Fences 5.81.

First, please let us know your system Windows version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe. It should be something like the screenshot below. I need the "Version XXHX (OS Build XXXXX.XXXX) part.

Hi cabyrd, we have a new test version which will generate some debug data which may help look into the issue. Could you see the instructions over on our other post https://forums.stardock.com/529991/page/1 ?

The first step will be to install the update (v5.82 Revision 4), reboot, verify the correct version in the about box.

Next, set things up the way you'd like them, including restoring a backup if that is part of your routine. Once you have it set up the way you'd like it, take another snapshot. Then, reboot, and if the problem is not yet resolved, upload your debug data using the instructions at https://forums.stardock.com/529991/page/1 so that we can take a closer look.

Thank you!

No problem I will do that and try to get what you need to help out from the other site.  Yea that that note on my desktop may be stupid but I never remember to set a restore point until after the fact and then when I do something stupid like delete all my icons in my fences because fences isn't working right or won't load and I am troubleshooting I delete the icons to find out that doesn't fix the issue and if I would have set a restore point just before then I could have restored to that point but instead I look and there are no restore points  because my Windows 11 didn't automatically create any restore points since it upgraded to the latest version and automatically turned the option off.  I never remember so I tried to make myself a note to remind myself.

Since our last communications I discovered a few more thing but since a newer version is starting will see if they are still a part of the newer version or not.

Right now, I will go get that newer version and follow the instructions to try to get setup the way you requested and let you know.

Thanks,

Thanks cabyrd122564, I’m seeing some oddities in your log. We’ll get you an updated copy later this week to go through the process again to get more information.  It may take several rounds, but hoping to get to the bottom of it.

Thank you

And thank you.  No hurry and as long as it takes is fine with me.  Look to moving forward with this.

Hi cabyrd122564, we have a new copy ready for testing. It will show as "v5.82 Revision 5" in the About tab. You can get it here. https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.5-j132-Setup.exe Install and then reboot so that it is in place, and verify the version in the about dialog.

From there, please give this a try to a few times over. From what you're sharing, it appears that no changes whatsoever to your layout stick, so just try moving some stuff around, creating a few Fence etc, rebooting and seeing if it sticks. Then do the same again, moving stuff around, create a new fence etc, and reboot again. Do this a total of a few times to really show the pattern of no changes sticking. Wait around for 10-20 seconds after making a change before doing anything like rebooting or changing screen resolutions.

Doing the above should help give some useful debug data. You can then submit this via that "Create bug report package" link we discussed last.

Thank you!

Hi cabryd, we got your updated report yesterday, thank you! It provided some important hints. It may take several additional attempts, but we have a new one here that has a chance. Please give this one a try https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.6-j133-Setup.exe ("v5.82 Revision 6"). It has some additional debug data for an additional report if things still aren't working, but also has an attempt at a fix. We have found the specific spot that it's breaking for you, so now it's just a matter of figuring out for your system what will make it work. Thank you for your continued help with this! Let us know how it goes, and in either event, please submit a new error log per previous instructions so that we can see how it went.

Thanks!

I uploaded the new data, and everything seems to be working fine now.  Fences 5_5.8.2.6 seems to have done the trick.  If I see anything else, I will let you know but right now it is working fine.  Also, Windows seems to be working a little better if that is possible.

I had a similar issue.  It appears that the new beta 5.83 fixes the issue,
