Fences constantly move position, all icons bunch up.

Issues ever since upgrade to fences 4- now seems 5 is out, will it even fix my issue? Help!

Hi,

Long time fences user, since 2016ish, upgraded to 4 last year and its just never worked right. Constantly my fences either move and my icons bunch at the top, or, the fence stays same position but my icons all bunch at the top and most often the title of the fence goes very small height and text.

I have to restore to last valid point in layout or restart and they come back most usually fine. often the icon order is now all jumbled (super annoying)

It seems like perhaps resolution switching may possibly cause it but i dont know. I am on my gaming PC on my 4k TV. Most every time after updating graphics drivers it happens (using Nvidia Experience Updater), or when tv has been off an then is turned back on again it sometimes happens, or sometimes when exiiting full screen apps.

Its incredibly frustrating.  Given I just purchaseed fences 4 last year, i would have expected a better run but its always had this issue and im just kind of fed up, seems this forum is the only place to post to get a resolution, hoping someone can help.

I use 250% scale in windows display settings and perhaps this has something to do with it?

All my fences at the top the titles of them go very small and the icons all bunch over the top of each other in one line. Has anyone experienced this issue and do they have a fix other than restarting or restoring the view?

Any help would be ultra appreciated :) I dont particularly want to pay 50$ on an upgrade to 5 when 4 has never worked right, and may still have the same issue.

My other concern is that with the transition from 3-4 i got a good 5 years of my licence... is fences now the new iphone? 1 year and it breaks? If so i'll just go back to windows icons and rework my start menu or something.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Fences 5 just release new version that come with new layout engine which should resolved multimonitor layout issue. Please refer here: https://forums.stardock.com/528229/ . While most user saw the improvement, there are still few which still have issue with the new version. What you can do is, do a 30 days trial and see if your issue resolved with Fences 5.

Also, do know that most of the time, icons drop off from Fences issue has something to do with Windows OneDrive Desktop sync. If this OneDrive feature was turn on, you have choice to turn it off, relocate your desktop icons from your OneDrive folder back to Original Desktop folder or leave it turn on and manually rearrange your icons back into it Fences and save your layout.

Thank you.

I don't have multi monitors... I've just told you I am using a single monitor... my TV in 4k.

Maybe you can work something out with your team here because this does not really seem fair to me as a customer.

I upgraded to 4 after being a loyal customer, So I can continue to use fences on the newest version windows (even tho 3 was still working I wanted to support stardock for a software I love)...  only to have it not work because of issues with your software, and now you want me to pay for a new version to fix issues with your software that should not have been there in the first place?

I don't want new features, and don't use even half the features of fences or anything fancy I just want fences to work on my desktop to fence my icons properly on a single screen without visual glitches all the time.

I'm not experiencing any loss of icons and I don't use one drive it is uninstalled on this machine.

Let me know what we can do here as I'm not really keen to pay top price on v5 after upgrading not that long ago ... Especially you've just told me it sounds like it still has issues too?

With the latest version, Fences moved all of my icons bunched up as well. I'm thinking this has something to do with the multi-monitor configuration. I tried restoring a layout but it didn't work.

Hello eden5,

Than lets work your issue on Fences 4. Please tell me more on your system and issue.

  1. Windows full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe
  2. Fences full version number.
  3. Monitor resolution and scale factors (100%,125%, 200% etc)
  4. What trouble shooting steps you already have tried so we can skip those that are done.

Thank you,

I'm seeing same issue as asheroto with latest fences update. Win11 with three monitors. I cannot restore backup. If I use only laptop I can restore backup and it works fine. As soon as I plug in other two monitors all of my icons bunched up on the bottom.

Hello,

I just updated to 5.81. It is till an issue as described above. Not a new issue, but ongoing one. I am using multiple monitors. This was not the case on earlier versions, version 4. Also, restoration from earlier backups does not make any difference (it does not restore to the earlier configuration).

Thank you,

Nate

Hi Axonian thank you for sending your report! We were able to reproduce this in full, and from our testing have resolved your specific scenario with https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.4-j131-Setup.exe. Please give it a shot?

This is a debug release so we'll want to get you to a full release-grade build later on but hopefully this resolves your specific issue.

Hi asheroto, we may have been able to resolve your issue. Please check out the copy at https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.4-j131-Setup.exe? You'll want to install, reboot, and then try to restore a backup after verifying in the About area that you are running "4.82 Revision 4". Restoring a backup and or unplugging/replugging/rebooting should no longer result in groups being bunched up.

Hi nbalert, we reviewed your logs and I think we may have been able to resolve your issue.  You'll need to install an updated debug copy at https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/Fences5_5.8.2.4-j131-Setup.exe, reboot, restore a snapshot (or otherwise rearrange things back where you want them) and then reboot. It should keep your settings after the reboot. You can confirm you're on the correct version by going to about, and verifing it says "v5.82 Revision 4"

Fingers crossed; thank you.

Hi Team,

While my thread got hijacked for another issue (no worries glad it helped someone) just swinging back for my original issue.

I think i have figured it out - it looks possibly to do with windows screensaver (using images) coming back into windows after monitor been off and i turn it back on. (it also as mentioned happens at graphics card update (Nvidia Geforce experience).

Ive not had the issue occur for a while now since changing windows screensaver to a third party visuals app - im going to monitor it - if/when it happens again i'll swing back with more info.
