Unable to create new Fences

from Stardock Forums

Hello,

Since probably the last update, I no longer have the "Create a Fence" option in the context menu when left-clicking. This makes it impossible to create new Fences. I am currently using Windows 11 23H2.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know few things.

  1. Windows full version and OS build numbers. Use Winver.exe
  2. Fences full version number.
  3. Is Fences enable on your system?
  4. If you click and drag make a rectangle on your desktop and release click, does "Create Fence here" menu appear?

Thank you very much for your prompt response.

  1. The full version of Windows and the OS build numbers is Windows 11 Pro 23H2 build 22631.3296.
  2. The full version number of Fences is 5.8.0.3
  3. Indeed, the Fences on my desktop are active and work very well.
  4. When I drag to create a rectangle on my desktop and release the click, the "Create Fence here" menu does not appear. In the menu, only "Configure Fences®" appears.

Thank you for the information. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

Hello Basj,

I did perform a clean reinstall of Fences, which resolved the issue until I restored my backup. This backup dated from 2020, when I had purchased the entire Stardock suite. In March of this year, I redid my whole system and reinstalled all my software. Since I lost the serial number, I had to repurchase Fences, which was the only part of the Stardock suite I still used.

The problem came from my backup, and I had to recreate all my Fences. It wasn’t an easy task because my configuration rules are precise and complex. The issue was likely due to a small compatibility problem between the 2020 version and the 2024 version regarding backup restoration.

Everything is now working fine.

One last question: how can I lock the size and position of my Fences on the desktop to prevent accidental movements? I believe this option existed in previous versions, but I couldn't find it in the latest ones.

Great, glad to hear that. For you new question, there is a new layout engine for Fences 5.5 and newer. If you using multi monitors setup, please set to Store may layouts on per-monitor configuration basis. Please refer here for more information on the new layout engine:https://forums.stardock.com/528229. Check the "Troubleshooting" section.

For backing up your layout you will need to click on. Restore a backup to excess the backup/restore layout panel.
