From All apps you can drag an drop an application to the desktop and then a shortcut is created.

When you create a shortcut with Fences 5 the image is shown correctly, but it somehow dissapears...

In Fences 4 this works without any problems.

Try this, Press Start button->Open Start panel, Search for "Store"-> Right click on "Microsoft Store"-> On the menu select "Create Shortcut"->Microsoft Store appear on your desktop. Rename it if you wish. Click and drag it into your Fences. That should do it.

There is no option to select "Create Shortcut" in this way.

Ah, sorry, I was using Stardock's Start11 start panel. It have create shortcut on that one.

The aim here is to create shortcut for Microsoft Store on desktop. Please try this guide: https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/5328/windows-10-tip-create-shortcuts-for-universal-apps. Should work on Windows 10 and 11. I tested it.

Thanks for the answer, that solved the issue!

  1. Stopped syncing the desktop to OneDrive
  2. Deleted the thumbnails cache, rebuild the icon cache and rebooted
  3. Recreated the missing icons

What I don't understand is why I didn't have this problem in Fences 4.

The green check marks on desktop icons were indicating that they were backed up on OneDrive...

This issue do happen in Fences 3 and Fences 4. I've seen them reported by others through out the years of these products. For why it does not appear on your Fences 4 system before. I do not know. Anyhow, great to hear you resolved you issue.

This happens for all UWP apps and keeps coming back...

Thank you for the screenshots. So the icon is still there. It just that the icons revert to default document icon. The issue is on DevToys only?

It happens to all the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps that are in Fences, so also like Microsoft Defender and Phone Link.

Strange thing that in the shell:AppsFolder all the icons that are in Fences are reverted to default document icons, but others that are not in Fences are still correct!

Okay, I tested on my system and I can not reproduce it. I would like to suggest first is to ensure the installation is good. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

After uninstalling and rebooting none of the icon images did recover (as you can see in the picture above).

Deleting the thumbnails cache, rebuilding the icon cache and rebooted, recreated the missing icons, nothing helped...

In the end I started syncing the desktop to OneDrive again and stopped syncing, ending up I had a lot of work to recreate almost all of the icons again. Somehow the icon images are now back?! But I don't know for how long...

Have you tried. Disable OneDrive desktop sync. Delete those shortcut icons from Desktop. Restart explorer.exe. Recreate the shortcut again. And see if these new ones stay. Also make sure not to enable Desktop sync ever again.

Deleting the shortcut icons, restarting explorer and recreating the shortcuts again indeed works! I will report back when they are gone again. (Of course without enabling the Desktop sync.)

Now I can reproduce the issue: If you create a shortcut to a UWP app and remove the "- Shortcut" text. Wait a bit and open WinZip (which initiates a refresh of the icons) and the icons images are gone! Interestingly enough the icon images remain if you keep the "- Shortcut" text. Any ideas?

Any idea why, Winzip is effecting your desktop icons? From your screenshot above, isn't Winzip itself a shortcut link?
