Fences 4.21 Release Feedback Thread

With the Fences 4.21 release, we are creating this thread so that users can report any observed issues.

Obtaining the product

Object Desktop members can get the release from within Object Desktop Manager

Individual purchases (as well as Object Desktop Members) can also be obtained from your account page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

For guest check-out purchase (no account), from this link: http://www.stardock.com/support/productkeyretrieval

Reporting an issue

Please include the following for anything found:

  • Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)

  • Detailed steps to recreate the issue seen

  • Screenshots and videos are very helpful.  Videos can be uploaded to a cloud drive service (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive, YouTube), with a shared link included in your post.  Images can be copied and pasted directly into a post.

  • If there are specific apps that the app does not work (well) with, please note what apps and their exact versions.  If any app is not common, a link to a trial version would be appreciated.

That would be the issue, we do not have a a workaround for people modifying that yet.

Today I encountered issues with Fences 4.21 and the new update Windows 11 Canary Build 25915. Several icons not showing.

I have the same issue, and many more on top of that.

Do you have HDR enabled on your desktop?

Just a reminder...

Quoting sdRohan, reply 2

While we appreciate all feedback, please remember that we offer no official support for beta \ preview \ developer channel versions of Windows. If you report issues while in any of those early release channels, you should not expect them to be addressed unless it still exists in a retail version of Windows.
End of sdRohan's quote

dspedzia, are we to assume you are on a dev branch of Windows as well then?

Quoting wolfiejunk,
I received the notification there was an update available. I proceeded with it, and, at the end of the process, I was notified that the computer needed to reboot. Later that day, I did reboot and everything seemed fine, but the following day (yesterday) I once again received the notice to upgrade. It was then that the screenshots were posted.

Hello,
From what I understand, for Stardock product to work properly, you will need to reboot "immediately" every time after uninstall and reinstall. So please try that. Uninstall again, reboot immediately, re-install the latest version, reboot again and see if the issue still there. Report back.

Thanks

OK... update time.

Because I have been insanely busy, I never had time to deal with this update notification issue. That's the bad news.

The good news, though it explains nothing, is that after two or three days, the notifications stopped coming. All on their own, they went poof and were no more.

So, it's a mystery notification, and I only hope that by letting you know this that they do not take revenge and come back tomorrow.

Thanks

Hi,

4.2.1 does not restore snapshot. How can I restore manually.
End of hakan5's quote

I was able to confirm restoring a snapshot is working:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/2023-08-02_12-55-21.mp4

If this is happening with every snapshot you try restoring (and after a reboot), please create a new thread as this would not seem to be a unique issue to 4.21.

I have been using Fences on Windows 10 for about a year and it has been working great.  I updated to 4.21 when I got the popup a month or so ago.
A few days ago I planned to make a video that would include my desktop.  Since I didn't want all of my Fences and icons to show, I looked up how to hide fences in the Fences Hotkeys.  I messed about with Win Space and Win Ctrl Space until I found the QuickHide section, double clicked on my desktop to hide my Fences, made my video, double clicked again to bring my Fences back and went about my day.
I have rebooted twice since then, and both times all of my fences and icons moved to my main monitor in a jumbled mess and resized to annoying proportions.
Since I have never had problems with Fences until I tried multiple versions of Win Space, Win Ctrl Space, and double click, could this have something to do with why everything moves when I reboot?
Thanks!

Well, I did that already.  I put the windows version, fences version, images, and described what I do to get it to repeat (I just boot my computer).  What more do you need, specifically beyond what that link describes?

Sorry, I should have make it more clear. Need to know information on your display setups. Single, dual or more display?. Resolution and Scale applied (100%,200%, 300% etc) on each monitors. Do you turn off your monitors manually before shutting down you system.

Thank you,

I can't reproduce your issue on my system. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

This worked to fix the problem, however I now feel dirty that the root cause is still unknown and this was the equivalent to "have you tried turning it off and back on again?"

I can't tell you what was the issue. But, if purge and reinstall solved it. It might just be something went wrong when you first installed it. Maybe you forget to reboot immediately after installation. Or conflicting with other software, which if this is the reason, the issue usually will return.

Try Cleanboot: https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

Note: Look like your problem not shared by others. So it is best for you to create your own thread moving forward.

I don't know where to report this so I'm writing here.

I don't know when the Japanese translation came in, but there are too many mistranslations.

"Disabled" in the hotkey settings is now "障害者", but this is a problematic mistranslation.

"障害者" means "handicapped".

Overall, it's a strange Japanese, but "Disabled" should be fixed as soon as possible.

i am using google translate

sorry

Original below

Noticed an issue with text in the dropdown menus when HDR is enabled. I tried to take a screenshot, but it looks normal when I do it (see 1st image below), but have also attached an actual photo of the screen and how it looks (2nd image)... Not sure if this is a Windows issue or a Fences issue.

Running Windows 11 22H2, and is displayed on a 3440x1440 display, 100% scale, standard landscape orientation, dark mode enabled, no special settings used otherwise. The selections in the dropdown menu it self appear correct, only the selected option at the top appears funky. If I turn HDR off, it looks just like it does in the 1st image.

I don't necessarily care, personally, I just noticed this issue and thought I would bring it to your attention.

Quoting sdRohan,

Try going to your 'Downloads' folder and deleting the 'Stardock' folder should it exist.

Let us know if it keeps happening after.

I have no such folder.

End of SteveMagruder's quote

I recently humored it by letting it install the same version over again. Since then, it hasn't bothered me again. Hmmmm

if you change the language to german and go to "Colors & appearance" ("Farbe & Aussehen"), close the Fences configuration and open it again, the language is set to english.

Same here. I'm using Fences in Chinese, and have the same issue.
