Unable to enable Fences

I have just purchased Fences 4.10. I cannot create a Fence. Right-clicking on the desktop shows an option to Enable Fences which doesn't do anything. I have gone through the troubleshooting section without success. I am running Windows 10 Pro Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.2728)

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try this, uninstall Fences 4, reboot immediately, download the latest version using this link mention in this thread: https://forums.stardock.com/517370/get;3881371. Install that version, reboot again. Retest and report back.

Same result. There were some errors when running the batch file.

Tried that with the same result. When I try and enable Fences there is a spinning circle for a few seconds.

I don't know if it means anything but if I go to "add or remove programs" it shows Fences 2 as well as Fences 4. If I try to remove Fences 2 it comes up that I am removing Fences 4.  When I originally removed Fences 2 (I had installed Fences 3) it came up with an error that something was in use. When I tried again it said it couldn't find the program.

This is what I have done.

I did a clean install of Windows 10

Installed Fences 2

Installed Fences 3 (It was an upgrade which is why I installed Fences 2 1st)

Tried to remove Fences 2 with an error as stated earlier

Purchased Fences 4 and removed Fences 3

Hope that all makes sense

Was any of the Fences version ever work in this computer? If it was, which version and how long ago? Was there any issue that causing you to upgrade from V2 to V3 and than to V4?

I will give you some background.

Several years ago I went from Windows to a Mac. I ran Windows on the Mac using Parallels and used Fences 3 on that. When I upgraded to an M2 Macbook air I could no longer run Fences as it was incompatible with Windows 11 Arc.

My brother passed away in February and I got his old Microsoft Surface which I reset and did a clean install of Windows 10. I have been using Fences for many years and updated them when a new version came out. I installed them one at a time on the new (to me) laptop but didn't run them. I did it that way as V3 was an upgrade and I have had other programs that wouldn't install an upgrade if the original one wasn't there. I decided I might as well get the latest version as there was an offer on it.

If we can't get V4 to work I could try installing V3 and if that works get a refund for V4

Not really sure why its not working on your system. So to be clear, Fences V3 was working before? If yes, can you try if you can setup Windows Sandbox and test Fences V4 in it. https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#sandbox

The Surface that you have might also be an ARM based processor like your Mac.

I set up Windows Sandbox and tested Fences 4 with the same result.

I have also uninstalled Fences 4 & installed Fences 3 & that works fine. Could be the solution is to stick with Fences 3 & get a refund. If you want to keep investigating I am willing to keep going

That is strange, might this be because you're using the wrong key to activate Fences 4? When you upgrade to Fences 4, you will get a different key to use on it. Did you use that key?

I will give a hint (enable/disable Fences using command line) to facilitate the testing needed to solve this problem.

Fences.exe /enable
Fences.exe /disable

or if you prefer to run .bat files:

"C:\Program Files (x86)/StardockFencesFences.exe" /enable
"C:\Program Files (x86)\StardockFencesFences.exe" /disable

I hope this helps you and others who are looking for a quick way to enable and disable the application.

Bests,
Ray
