Some applications shortcut icons in fences suddenly become blank icons

Hi There,

I am new to Stardock, I have installed Fences on Windows 11 home, Alienware Nvidia RTX 2070. Created few fences, fully visible, with roll-up enabled although that does not seem to make a difference and added shortcuts to few applications in 3 different fences. A couple of days later I logged into my laptop and I notices that few icons within the fences have become blank icons (no graphics) as though the icons were missing, few apps retained their icons, these are not obscure apps but mainstream, e.g. VScode retained its icon while Windows terminal icon turned blank. Creating new shortcuts does not help as the new shortcuts even on the desktop are still missing the icons. When right mouse clicking on a shortcut and selecting properties, the icon graphics does appear on the left top. I also have start11 and deskscapes11 installed.

Once this happens uninstalling Fences does not fix the problem, uninstalling Deskscapes does, I have not tried uninstalling deskscape while keeping fences.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to be clear, is those icons inside those Fences or Outside the fences, on the desktop? And, you're using Fences V4? full version numbers please.

Hi,

I have same issue as alrubaa. Random desktop shortcuts icons became blank. First time it happened to single shortcut only and while it was still possible to change its icon to something else, its default icon would be always shown as blank page. Therefore I decided to delete icon cache and restarted explorer and it fixed the issue for two days. Today when I created new Fence and added few new shortcuts, icons of two of them became blank page icons only after few minutes. I tried to restart explorer without icon cache removal and this time one of the corrupted icons got reverted to its default icon while the other one stayed corrupted as you can se below.

Windows 10 Pro 21H2, Fences v4.0.0.3.

Need to know more on your issue.

  1. Windows 7,8,10 or 11? And its version numbers. Please use Windows own Winver.exe to get full version numbers.
  2. Fences version numbers.
  3. Is your G drive an internal Drive or cloud/network/external drive?

3. It's an internal nvme ssd drive (it has 2 partitions and the first partition is OS, therefore I'm certain the drive is always connected and it's available all the time)

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: [link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Thanks for your advice, unfortunately this won't help me to solve the issue, because I've done clean windows installation before installing Fences 4.0.0.3, there are no residuals from previous Fences versions. Reinstall of Fences won't and can't fix corrupted iconcache.

Here are more info.:

I am using windows 11 Home 21H2, build: 22000.376.

Fences version 4.0.0.3

This suddenly happens, where icons of some shortcuts, not all inside Fences appear as blank, after that, if I try to recreate those particular shortcuts on the desktop they appear as blank too. It is always the same applications.

I tried various things, if I uninstall DeskScapes and Fences, re-start the laptop, things go back to normal on the desktop. If I uninstall Fences on its own, certain icons remain blank on the desktop.

If I uninstall DeskScapes 11, but keep Fences, then delete the icon caches on Windows, re-start my laptop, those particular icons remain blank, then, I recreate the icons on the desktop one by one, the icon graphics re-appear on the desktop and in Fences one by one without me having to copy them.

A way to replicate the effect on my laptop is to put the laptop to sleep, for exampel I close the lid/screen, then when I open the laptop I see those specific icons have gone blank.

 

Any ideas please?

Same issue for me, i.e. icons keep disappearing for selected shortcuts.  I continuously re-create the shortcuts with icons, but then after a few days, select icons disappear again.  Running Windows 11.

  4. When you said missing icons, do you mean missing icons or the icons become blank/black icon?
  5. If it is totally missing, and it is not icons from portal Fences, does these shortcut icons or files still exist inside your actual Desktop folder?

I am having the same problem.

Windows 11 Home Version 24H2 (OS Build 26.100.4484)

Fences Version 6.00

The problem started right after install v6, everything was fine with v5.

Some Icons inside a Fence are only white/blank, i.e., no graphics.  Mostly they seem to be Microsoft Apps, e.g., Teams, Notepad, Paint, Snipping Tool.  It seems to progress, a few days ago I only had one blank icon but today it is seven.
