Fences 4.0.0.3 error message appears in settings "Hotkeys"

"The keyboard extension for Fences does not appear to be loaded."

Hello experts,

after succussfull upgrading to Fences 4.0.0.3 (from 3.13) I got the following error message when I go to settings "Hotkeys". The message appears after a few seconds after clicking on "Hotkeys". There is just the "OK" button to close the message in the pop-up-window.

The keyboard extension for Fences does not appear to be loaded. You may need to reboot your system or reinstall Fences.
Advanced users can look for the task "StardockFencesHotkeySupport" within the system tray Scheduler.

I did a clean reinstall with purge tool from stardock. But no success. Error messages still appears.

I am on Win 10 21H2.

Fences itself works fine so far. I just got this message in the settings of Fences at the new setting "Hotkeys".

What can I do to make this new function working? How can I define a new task in the system tray scheduler? I did not found any task with the mentioned name of the above error message.

Many Thanks and best regards

Joachim

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try cleanboot steps as mention here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot. See if something is blocking Fences. Try that and report back.

Thank you,

Hello,

I checked my type of account (WIN 10). It is a WIN admin account with MS account (no local account).

I also did a clean reboot and disabled all services in the system configuration. For the startup settings (task manager) the two FENCES services were kept still enabled.

But the message still comes up in settings 'HOTKEYS'.

What could I check now to resolve this problem?

Thanks and best regards

Joachim

Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here: [link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Also, please report on these items.

  1. Windows version (10/11), you can use Winver.exe to get Windows full version numbers.

I am on Win 10 Pro 21H2 (Build: 19044.1415) 64-bit.

Hi,

I did a clean reboot, meaning I disabled all services (except Windows services) in msconfig and disabled all programs in autostart (except Fences).

Furthermore, I also created a new user account of type Administrator and logged in with it. Before that, of course, reboots of the PC were performed.

However, the message still appears and the error still exists. Therefore I assume another cause or a bug.
What should I do now?

Many thanks and Merry Christmas

Joachim

For any with the issue, if you open Windows Task Scheduler, is this enabled?

And if manually run, is it resolved?

Hello,

in the Task Scheduler Library the entry 'StardockFencesHotkeySupport' is not present at all.

Can I add it there manually and how should the task be defined?

Thanks & greetings

If you do the purge and reinstall, is it there then?

https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

If not, is there any mention in your Anti-virus logs that it blocked the creation of it?

Hello,

I have made no progress with purge and re-install (run as admin), ie the message 'The keyboard extension for Fences does not appear to be loaded...' still appears.

I even did the purge and re-install with inactive Kaspersky KIS 2021 AntiVirus protection (21.3.10.391 patch g), so only Windows Defender was active.
In the log of Kaspersky KIS 2021 I could not find any entries regarding the creation of the task 'StardockFencesHotkeySupport'.
The task is still not present in the task scheduler.

What can I check now?
Is there a bug concerning the creation of the task 'StardockFencesHotkeySupport' in Win10 during installation?

Thanks & greetings

If you create a new admin account:

And install under it, does it work then?

Hello, as already written on 2021-12-24, I have already done this without success.

I have now done this again with a newly created local admin account. Still no success. The message still appears.

While this does not solve what on your PC is blocking the creation of the task, unzip this to your desktop:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/StardockFencesHotkeySupport.zip

In Task Scheduler, import it:

Reboot

Does it work then?

Hello,

the message no longer appears. In the task scheduler, the task is now permanently present (even after a reboot of the PC). So this problem is solved. :D  :sun:

But I miss now in the context menu on the desktop the entry 'Configure Fences'. This is no longer present. Can this be related to purge and reinstall?

In another blog entry I read that a user has the same problem on Windows 11. I have Windows 10 21H2 Build: 19044.1415 (latest patches).
Does the problem exist also on Windows 10 or can I restore the context menu entry?

Many THANKS and greetings
Joachim

desktop context menu entry missing config fences

Hello,

after another re-installation of Fences 4.0.0.3 (without deinstallation) the entry to configure Fences in the context menu at Windows Desktop is available again. So Fences is working completely correct (again). :D

Best regards

I was having a similar issue.  I work remote, but have a local office and two company machines - Computer A (desktop) and Computer B (laptop).  I do almost all of my work on Computer A, which physically sits at the office and is on the local network.

I installed Fences on Computer A and Computer B while working remote.

While working remote on the VPN with an remote desktop session into Computer A from Computer B: I receive the error message on Computer A, but everything works on Computer B.  I tried the purge and reinstall multiple times for Computer A via the remote desktop session, but I continue to receive the error message.

Yesterday, I was at the office and decided I needed to do a purge and reinstall on Computer A while signed into Computer A.   However, before I did that, I just tried it and everything worked perfectly and there was no error message.  I had Computer B with me, I plugged that into the company network and accessed Computer A via remote desktop (with no VPN) and everything still worked!

Today, I am remote again accessing Computer A via a remote desktop session with Computer B.  Everything again is working on Computer B (always did), but now I am receiving the same error message on Computer A.

So things seem to work over VPN and things seem to work via remote desktop, but when utilizing remote desktop via the VPN I seem to get the error.  I don't know enough about how this stuff works to understand why this would be, but I thought it may be helpful.

We are having this same issue when using remote access to our computers:

The event logs show this:

A reinstallation of Fences does not fix this issue which only appears with our remote RDP sessions. Using a computer directly does not result in this error.

Note: many of our computers are virtual so a reinstall outside of a virtual environment is not possible.

We are using Windows 10, 21H1

Hopefull, a fix for this will be upcoming.

It's not broken as far as we know and as your local test shows.

What is required for it to work is this and you would want to see how remote access may interact with it:

How RDP might have permissines issues in your environment perhaps?
