Internet Explorer 8 or later is required to use this software??

My PC Windows 10 OS decided to completely corrupt itself during a Windows update so I needed to redownload windows 10 and wipe my PC harddrive to reinstall Windows fresh.

To save space on my hard drive and I did't like Microsofts spyware I downloaded a version with Cortana, Edge and Internet Explorer pre-removed as I never use them and never will.

This has caused an unexpected problem. I am trying to install Fences 3.09 and it is saying

"Internet Explorer 8 or later is required to use this software".

Is there any work arounds for this? I tried downloading Windows 11 x64 but cannot get it to install to my PC.

I do not want to wipe my whole PC again just to install Fences. I also feel it absurd you are relying on the completely defunct Internet Explorer in order to install it to Windows 10. Therefore what can I do to get Fences installed please.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. From what I know, somehow Fences need internet Explorer to install, but I am not 100% sure. Anyway, I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

I believe the installer may use the IE component for the cross sell UI and the activation UI likewise is HTML and will use those controls.

The webcontrol in Windows is considered an essential component of Windows thats guaranteed to be there and must not be removed.  Whoever removed those components in the version of Windows you downloaded didn't realise this it seems.

Ok, thanks, but the question is, is there a workaround to either put the core componants back, or to manually install them to my PC, or any other tricks to get it to work using some other software?

I have been googling and my issue has quite a few people seeking it with regards to Fences but no solution ever mentioned for it other than one post from someone on this forum a few years back suggesting to possibly install a component of Chromium to get the needed Webrowser Control onto your system?

Looking at the post it was actually you who suggested it but it seems the poster didn't come back to confirm if it worked or not?

How were you suggesting to go about this with Chromium?

I think Neil was saying that various programs actually expect a 'full' Windows OS, not one that has been knee-capped by someone who doesn't understand how much it may be needed.  It shouldn't be a requirement of a 3rd party program creator to have to bundle an alternate web browser with the program so it can function when the OS is supposed to already have one included...;)

Imagine if every program dependent on HTML functionality installed it's own 'handler'.  You'd soon have entirely new concerns about bloatware...;)

My suggestion was not to use Chromium, it was a comment that apps use the OS provided control to avoid having to ship a 30MB+ copy of the chromium engine in the installers.

The best solution would be to reinstall Windows using a proper Microsoft shipped version.  I would strongly recommend this as you don't know what else may be missing in the version you downloaded.

The control you are missing is the MSHTML.dll one which would need to be registered on the system.  It may also need other files.
