Fences is freezing my desktop

Hello,

Fences is not working properly any more.

Behavior:

Desktop freezes every time I boot.

When I regain control after minutes, a mouse click on the desktop will result in a “grayed” Desktop without fences or icons. After that fences will appear without icons.

After several tries I sometimes get the error message that “the explorer wasn’t closed correctly and fences will be deactivated”.

I tried in different environments (monitors etc.). Fences are only on one Monitor.

I tried purge and reinstall – same result. I have red on forums that there a more ppl that describe the same problem and behavior.

Without Fences (after Purge) – everything is normal.

The whole thing is really annoying because fences is supposed to increase productivity (which it does IF it works).

I appreciate any support.

OS Version = Windows 10 Enterprise (Build 17134.1845) [64Bit]; Windows 10 Branch = 1803

Fences Version = 3.0.9.11 - no Updates available

I am working in a corporate environment with local admin rights.

I do not have websense nor forcepoint.

Disabling security settings ("disabling high entropy for explorer.exe") is not an option nor possible due to policies.

I also can not do extensive research and debugging.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Any reason you are not updating your Windows 10 version to its latest? Windows 10 now is officially at v20H2, which should work better with Fences including better support from your graphics drivers.

Also please try the Cleanboot Steps as mentioned here : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

Thanks.

Windows updates are performed centrally by corporate IT. I have no influence on that and dont know why I dont have v20H2.

I cant do that due to Network Policy. It is also not possible to disable all kinds of services. This is a productive Laptop after all.

I am afraid there is nothing we can do at this time if this is not possible.

Hello Sean - that is certainly a little disapointing.
Is there no way to monitor or debug fences without exploratively "rearanging" windows?
It seems to me, that I am experiencing similar problems like in https://forums.stardock.com/502301/continuos-crashing-on-windows-10-x64-20h2

I suspect our corporate security measures to be similar strict but contrary to Stephan - I am not a security expert.

The lead dev for Fences is aware of the issue and it is my hope that progress can be made.

If you are good with it, I will let him know that we may have individuals like yourself willing to test builds to compensate.

Any updates on this issue? I'm having the same problem. Hopefully it's fixed soon as I've removed fences and will be requesting a refund if not resolved.
