Won't Open?

I'm running Windows 10 on a HP Pavilion and I cannot get CursorFX to open.  I had the free trial version that worked for about 15 minutes then crashed completely, never to be revived.  I purchased ObjectDock last night, deleted the trial version then downloaded & installed CursorFX and IconPackager and I know they installed completely--IconPackager works just fine, I had to provide my Product Key in the last step of the install, both are showing in my Start Menu and the shortcuts were added to my desktop but every time I double click on CursorFX, I get nothin.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,  Jenn P.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mentioned here:  https://forums.stardock.com/485856/cursorfx-support-faq#reinstalling Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account. Reboot after the purged. Reinstall, and Reboot again after the installation. Retest it. Report back here.

Hi Basj,

So I completely uninstalled CursorFX, made sure it was removed from my Apps, my Programs and I even confirmed it was completely removed from the registry. Then I restarted and downloaded it again from my invoice.  Made it all the way through, including entering my Product Key & email address and got  confirmation that it was activated successfully.  Restarted and it's back in my Start Menu, under Programs in Control Panel and under Apps in Settings and the shortcut is back on my desktop but it just will not open.  When I double click on it, I get the box "Do you want to allow this app to make changes?", I click "yes" and nothing happens. The box goes away, like normal, but CursorFX never comes up.  It hasn't come up since the free trial version crashed on me Sunday or Monday.

Thanks,

Jenn

Hello,

Purge, which I suggested it very different that normal uninstall. Please use it.

My apologies.  I've now done the purge and a restart.  I confirmed that CursorFX was completely removed from my Start Menu, my desktop, my Apps and my Programs--though it did not remove the file from my Windows (86) folder where the system put it during the install so I deleted it from there manually.  I re-installed again using the link in my purchase invoice, accepted the T&Cs, entered my License Key & email address when prompted, got the "activation successful" message.  CursorFX is back in all the usual spots but still will not open when I double-click on it.  I even right-clicked and selected "Open as Administrator"--get through the "Do you want to allow this app....?" box (where I always click Yes for this app) and then nothing.  I don't even get the spinning cursor like the system is even trying to open the app.

One weird thing, though, when I did the purge.  The black screen (looks like what you get when you type CMD) told me the operation completed successfully but a box popped up that said "Invalid Uninstall Control File: C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\CursorFX\uninstall\unistall.xml" but the Stardock CursorFX file was still in that location after I purged & restarted.  I have screenshots if that will help.

Thanks,

Jenn

Thanks, need to know if you have installed it in different location than its default location? If you did, please try again and this time, try to Install it in the default location.

Thank you!!  Could you also forward that I also downloaded the Object Dock manager and while it says "Configure" in the drop-down next to CursorFX, it won't even open from there?  And when going through ObjectDock Manager it doesn't even bring up the "Do You want to allow this app...." box like it does when I try to open from Start or my Desktop?

thank you so very much for all your assistance, Basj!

So when you do open it from other locations, you are getting prompted by Windows, something like this, yes, the lower right Action Center bubble?

If so, you should be able to flag it as ok.  If not, try turning off Windows Controlled Folder Access as a test:

Hi Sean,

I always click "yes" when that warning box comes up but mine looks like this and once I click yes, the box goes away and the app is supposed to open but it stopped opening Sunday or Monday:

My Controlled Folder Access is already turned off.

So I clicked on CursorFX in ObjectDesktop and this time the Windows "Do you want to allow this app...." box came up.  I clicked yes but still the app won't open fully.  Double-clicked the shortcut on my desktop again, too and the same thing--warning box comes up, I click "yes" then nothing happens.  So weird & frustrating!!

quick update--i did sfc/scannow & Windows did find & fix some corrupted files (I don't know which ones, though) so I finished that, re-started so it could finish the repairs and when I opened ObjectDesktop, the drop down menu in CursorFX showed "Open" (it usually says "Configure").  Yay, it's fixed!!  Eh, not so fast. Clicked on "Open", got the "Do you want to allow this app to make changes..." box, clicked yes and same thing---nothing.  BUT......now the drop down menu in CursorFX shows "Configure".  Don't know if any of this means anything but figured I'd send it anyways.

I would suggest since you already solved the corrupted files, try the purge and reinstall again, as I suggested in my first reply to you. Try that and see if it helps and report back.

HI Basj,

I purged but got the below message.  I re-started, re-installed and then re-started again.  CursorsFX still won't open.  I stays in my Object Desktop as "Configure" but it now has a "cursors" option that takes me to the website where I can download new cursors--that's new.  Before it would only let me uninstall.  This is the message that I've gotten both times I've run the purge, even though it says on the "cmd" screen that it was completed successfully.

Jen,

Don't worry, or bother using, Object Desktop manager - just try to open CursorFX from any search or from a Start menu entry:

When opened, you should not get a UAC ('Do you want to...') window, it should just open:

https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/2020-10-19_09-14-50.mp4

If you are getting prompted, and have CursorFX.exe checked to run as admin, undo that:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Stardock\CursorFX

Ensure the same is not the case for CusrorFXConfig.exe

Hi Sean,

It doesn't open from Start or Search either.  I followed the path you provided and pulled up CursorsFX in the Program  Files (86) folder but I don't have the Compatibility tab when I pull up Properties:

I also don't have CursorFXConfig.exe.  I have CursorFX4-fs-setup_sd and "run as administrator" is already unchecked.

I get the UAC "Do you want to..." box when I open Icon Packager, too.  I don't get that message with Window Blinds, Curtains, Fences or DeskScapes.

Sorry, I'm going to detour with another question super quick while you're thinking about the above :)

So, Icon Developer isn't compatible with Windows 10? At least that's why Object Desktop Manager says (I was thisclose to purchasing it, too).  Will it ever be?

The site says that Skin Studio is 1) compatible with Windows 10 and 2) included with my Window Blinds but I cannot find it anywhere.  If I click "get it now" on Stardock.com it takes me to purchase either Window Blinds or Object Desktop.  If I click "edit this style in Skin Studio" when in Window Blinds, it takes me to the Skin Studio information page in Stardock but there's nothing to download or install anywhere.

<sigh> my sincerest apologies, I am terribly new at all of this!  You have been so very patient, I am very grateful!

If you don't have the former, it's not installed or not installed properly.  CursorFX4-fs-setup_sd is the installer, not what is run to use the app.

After running CursorFX4-fs-setup_sd, you should have the following in this directory:

If you dont, the install failed.

This, right? I couldn't make the text any smaller but the screenshot is showing the whole list of files under CursorFX.  Weird how there isn't a .exe file, though.  I included a screenshot of my Start Menu showing CursorFX under "Recently Added".  I always assumed stuff was successfully installed if it appeared in my Start Menu.  Should I uninstall, reboot, purge completely, reboot then re-install again from My Downloads in my Stardock account online?

I got the Skins 10, too--thank you!  Haven't opened it but it's in my Start Menu so I better go check for the .exe file.  :)

Best,

Jenn

oh, shoot!  Things look different when you include the "file extension" column.  So sorry!  This is what I have in Program Files (x86):

What happen if you double click on that "CursorFXConfig.exe"? Does it open CursorFX config windows? If it does, please pick any theme and apply it. Does it change your cursor?

it brought up the "Do you want to allow this app...." box, I clicked yes.  Then my task bar sort of jiggled/glitched a little then nothing.  It's showing as a Background Process in Task Manager, though (I don't know if that means anything or not). It's not showing under "Apps" like the others I have open (Opera, Outlook, File Explorer, OneNote, Word).

There is something blocking CursorFX to do its work. That "Do you want to allow this app.." don't come up on my system. On my system, it simply change the cursors to the theme I choose when I press "Apply" button. But I am not sure, what is blocking it in your system. I think it best to wait for Sean to come in and help out on this one. Since it is currently weekend. You, most probably, need to wait until Monday morning US time for him to come on. We appreciate your patience.

Please make sure UAC is set to default:

If that fails, is there anything in your Windows Event Viewer indicating that it is crashing or that it is being blocked? You can go through the logs and clear them out (no harm to do so):

Try running CFX again and check each to see if a entry is created.  You may also want to try disabling your AV app for testing.

Sorry for the response delay!!  I had to do a re-install of my Windows 10 so I'm slowly re-adding apps & stuff.  I'll work on CursorFX today and let you know how it goes.  The re-install may have fixed it (wouldn't that be lovely?)  :)
