vertical fence

I created a vertical fence with 7 icons in it, one icon wide. Worked fine for over a year. Today, only 4 icons are showing in the vertical fence. If I widen the fence to 2 columns, all my icons are there. Fences won't allow me to move them to one column! I can widen the fence so they are all in a line, but when I narrow the fence again, I can't get more that 4 icons stacked vertically.
I tried rebooting the computer; made no difference.

Why did it change, and how can I get my 1x7 vertical fence back?

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Try restoring to a previous " Snapshot " that was right .
Open the Fences app to layout and snapping.

See if that works for you ..

No, that did not work. The image in the daily snapshot is correct (1x7), but the fence is restored to 2 columns, even if I delete it and restore it.

I am running 3.0.9.11 currently.

Will the purge retain my Fences settings, or will I have to create them all over again?

It should retain and snapshots should still be there ...

One final question - I have Fences installed on my desktop and 3 laptops, and 4 license keys. How do I tell what license is on this computer for reinstallation?

If you don't remember I guess try them all

till you find the one that works ..

Well, I ran the purge batch file, and it crashed the computer and now all my fences are gone. I've reinstalled fences twice, too.
I've wasted 2 hours with this crap, and I'm not very happy about it.

Now what?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. What is the error when your computer crash? Is the crash happened while you doing the purge? or Re-installing? or restarting? Need to be more specific. And need more information on your crashed system.

1) Windows version. Please use Winver.exe for full Windows version numbers.

Thanks

This whole thing seems like one more reason why one would want to manually place icons in a fence at times, instead of having the fence decide their placement. It wouldn't solve the problem, but it would be a workaround in such cases

ver 1903 build 18362.1016
what crashed was Windows Explorer. Initial failure was that double-clicking on icons did nothing. After 15 seconds, the icon would select, but the shortcut never did execute. Had to reboot to gain normal function.
Decided to reinstall Fences, which did reinstall, and my Fences were intact, but initial issue in this posting, 1x7 Fence that got changed to 2x4, and no way to change it to 1x7, was still present.

Decided then to try the purge, as suggested above.
While executing the purge batch file, the display turned green, with no icons showing, and just sat there.
I was able to use ctrl-alt-delete to access task manager, and log off. When  I logged back on, Fences was installed, but all my fences are gone. Icons are still arranged as if Fences was active, even after several reboots. Fences 3.0.9.11 is installed.

Any idea how to get Fences to work properly? Icons are still arranged in the groups I made, but no fences are visible.

Hello,
Did you turn the transparency all the way off? You can adjust it back or just click on reset to default for a fast one.

No, the settings are all normal. I created a new fence, and it acts the way I would expect.
I can draw a new fence around the the icons on my desktop, but my color scheme has been reset, too.

So, is transparent fence issue still there? If it still does please post a video of the issue so we can understand it better.

Ok, here's a screen capture. All of these used to be inside a roll up fence. Now the fence is gone, although the icons stay in one place, (which doesn't happen when Windows is in charge of icons.)
So, where did all my fences go?

Is this happened to all the fences or just one fence? What happen if you turn on "Auto arrange Icons"?

This happened to all my fences when I ran the purge batch file. I can create new fences, but all the old ones have disappeared.

Have you tried the Layout snapshot restore? Does it work? and

What do you get when you turn that one? Icons stay in place or it arranged to the left screen?

Possible solution:

After fighting with Fences and reading around on with web I happened to find a solution that well, works for me :)

Discovered the desktop icon size was not selected. That is, right-click on empty desktop, select the View sub-menu, then select one of the sizes in the top section.  I enabled Classic and all my Fences started displaying a single column again.

Hope this helps someone.

Dear Rockney, I was looking for months since new purchase for a one-column fence, never worked as icons would always arrange in 2.

Your trick did it! Champion!

StarDock guys should pick this up as a feature/bug.

That fixed it for me too! I upgraded to version 4 hoping the resizing to single columns would work again (it started being a problem on version 3). Same problem with version 4 for me ... but your fix worked for me. I too had no icon size selected in the right->click on windows desktop and select view pane. Selected medium icons and now all is well again with fences for me.

Thanks for posting this!
