Window opened in different virtual desktop, getting tabbed together

Hello.

I have recently noticed this behavior. I have kept "automatically group identical windows together unless in another group as on. Whenever I am opening an application (eg word, pdf, explorer, excel) in a virtual desktop, which is already open in another virtual desktop, the application gets tabbed together.

Eg Explorer "a" is opened in Virtual desktop 1. When I open another explorer "b" in another virtual desktop 2, both explorer a and b are tabbed together. When I clicked on Explorer a, it takes me to virtual desktop 1, when i clicked on explorer b, it takes me to virtual desktop 2.

In the task view, each application is seen in their respective virtual desktop. I have checked windows virtual desktop setting and it is set to "only the desktop I am using"

Thanks

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

With the current version of 1.21, I could only reproduce it with Excel (Word, Notepad, WinExp all worked as expected).

I have reported it internally: 0206456

Thank you for the report.

It is happening with me in excel, word, explorer and pdf reader. Not tested with other apps.

I'd like to enhance this report.

I'm testing with Groupy 1.32 on Windows 10 1909 with the built-in Virtual Desktop feature.

My favorite behavior would be, that groups should stay on a desktop and windows on different desktops should not be grouped in any case.

Testing with Applications Windows Explorer (Option to run all Explorer windows in a separate process is checked) and Microsoft Word.

Initially all Desktops are empty.

  • Open an Explorer window, adding an Explorer on Desktop 1
  • Switch to Desktop 2
  • Open an Explorer window

All is fine, same doing these steps with Word

Enable option to auto group windows of the same type

  • Open an Explorer window, adding an Explorer on Desktop 1
  • Switch to Desktop 2
  • Open an Explorer window

On Desktop 2, I get a group of two Explorer windows; clicking on the first switches to Desktop 1, clicking on the second on Desktop 1 switches to Desktop 2; all in all, I have two Explorer windows in one group spread over two Desktops, where I would expect three explorer windows in two separate groups.

Word is still behaving fine in this configuration, so this is something special to Explorer?

Enable the auto grouping of Word windows.

  • Open a Word window, adding Word on Desktop 1
  • Switch to Desktop 2
  • Open a Word window

Now, I get the same erratic behavior: On Desktop 2, I get a group of two Word windows; clicking on the first switches to Desktop 1, clicking on the second on Desktop 1 switches to Desktop 2; all in all, I have two Word windows in one group spread over two Desktops, where I would expect three Word windows in two separate groups. (Document2 and Document3, Document1 is lost)

By the way, why is "Close all windows in this group" greyed out, when there's only a single window in a group?

Regards

BigMike

Is there any progress on this issues. I really like to have separate containers on different Virtual Desktops.

Now (Windows 10 20H2, Groupy 1.48) for explorer windows, the behavior is still the same.
For word: If auto grouping windows of the same type is enabled, it will work on my first Desktop. If I switch to another, while a Word group is on Desktop one, I'll get separate Word windows on the second Desktop. This is way better than the explorer behavior, but still not perfect.
