BUGS IN FENCES 2&3

BUGS

In the lack of technical support, does anyone know why, after installing fences 2 and then 3 do I get icons placed on the desktop instead of in a so-called fence? If I try to delete them I delete the entire folder! So it hasn't just created the icons ~ its MOVED the folders to the desktop.

This happened in fences 2 and it has happened in fences 3

Well, I'm not support, but with the limited info you are giving, let me ask you this:

Have you set rules to send icons to certain Fences? It doesn't happen on it's own.

I Have one fence I set for all new icons go to it, then I move them where I want them.

Unless you tell Fences otherwise, icons would normally go to the desktop, not into a fence.

Hi, No I had not set up any rules and yes, it did happen on its own.

The only solution that I found was to copy the contents of the folder to a new location on a different drive, delete all the icons which also deleted the contents of the folder, uninstall Fences 3 and reboot and then copy the files back from the different drive to their original location. All back to normal.

The only question now is: do I re-install Fences 3 and is it trustworthy? Shame there isn't a proper support centre...

Hello,

Not really clear on what the issues are but, I have forward your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

The 'issue' is that when trying to create a 'Fence' the program ALSO creates icons on the desktop. If these icons are deleted the whole of that folder is also deleted.

THAT is unacceptable.

If you still do not understand you should issue a refund and I will not re-install Fences. I probably won't anyway as I no longer trust Stardock.

I never have seen that happen on my desktop, and never did read any report from others with something similar with your issue. It will be interesting to see if a purge and reinstall could help solve the problem as mentioned here :  https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Just make sure to re-download the latest version from your account. Reinstall that version, reboot after the install and retest. Report back here.

Thank you,

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

We are always looking to improve so can you better define what you feel is 'proper' or what we 'lack' in terms of support- where have we failed to be precise?

Without more information, but reading how you have seen something in both version, there might be a misunderstanding of how Fences works.

does anyone know why, after installing fences 2 and then 3 do I get icons placed on the desktop instead of in a so-called fence?

As RND pointed out, even with Fences installed, icons will go to the desktop unless rules are set up to have them routed to specific Fences or you move them manually.

If I try to delete them I delete the entire folder! So it hasn't just created the icons ~ its MOVED the folders to the desktop.

Fences does not, nor has it ever, 'created icons' it organizes and displays them that already exist or are created by you / other apps.

There are two types of Fences, regular ones that organize desktop icons:

The only way regular Fences will delete icons is if you tell it to:

The other type are Folder portals which will allow you to map a specific folder, on any of your drives, to the desktop for viewing and management including deletion and what I believe you to mean here:

If these icons are deleted the whole of that folder is also deleted.
End of quote

Here are also 2 good videos on how Fences is used and some of its features:

I did have the latest version and there is a first time for everything!

I did reinstall Fences 3 and the same thing happened immediately the install was finished so obviously the un-install did not completely clear the system of Fences or Stardock 10 (I uninstalled that as well).

I then worked through Regedit and deleted all references to Stardock and Fences.

The system is now clear of Stardock I hope and that is how I intend to keep it. Waste of time and money ~ goodbye....
