Custom Faction Mod not working anymore

I have installed the beta hotfix for mods to work again and everytime I try to start a new game it crashes. I looked at everything and the only thing I am thinking is that I do not have Retribution, but I do have Intrigue. Please if anybody can tell me what I can do...I am dying here. Everything worked fine until this frigging update.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

It would help if we could see what's in your debug.err file, it is located in \Documents\My Games\GC3 or \Documents\My Games\GC3Crusade

And if we could check the custom faction directly, it is located in \Documents\My Games\GC3\Factions or \Documents\My Games\GC3Crusade\Factions

If you could upload them to a cloud service (DropBox, Google Drive, One Drive) and post a link here, the developers can take a look at it.

The first one takes me to a folder with civs, which one is the one that crashes? Or is it all of them.

And the second link gives an error message when I try to access it.

Hi,

Could you post your ShipStyleSet folder in My Games/GC3Crusade as well? I noticed there are debug messages about the ship style for your modded faction failing validation.  This is probably why the game is crashing when you try to play with that faction.  I would like to make sure that the validation is not failing for a buggy reason.

Because I don't have the ship style set data yet, I can't be sure that this will actually work, but you could try copying your custom civ for editing from the civ select screen, going to the fleet style, and resaving it, adding any missing ship classes you might see.  For a faction built in the built-in faction editor, this would normally be done automatically by the game, filling any missing required ship designs with some defaults.  Because your custom faction is in a mod, though, the game does not provide this fallback data automatically, which may be why you are seeing a crash.  Hopefully that gets you playing again while we address this crash on our side.

I also expect that copying your faction from the faction select screen and resaving it, then making sure to play with that faction copy, will get you loading into a game as that faction again.

This might have been confusing, since we've been talking about modded data vs. custom data, but the ShipStyleSet folder I'm looking for wouldn't be in your mod, it would be at the base user data level, so e.g. Documents\My Games\GC3Crusade\ShipStyleSet. Your debug.err mentions trying and failing to validate a ship style called Aesir Terran Ship Style_ABAEEA99C5394EA897535219B9690704, suggesting there is a .shipset file corresponding to that in your Documents\My Games\GC3Crusade\ShipStyleSet folder.  This ship style is then trying to be used by your modded Aesir faction, but because the ship style is failing validation, it isn't available, and because it's a mod, it doesn't fall back to the default Terran ship style. I'd like to explore the option of editing the ship style instead, but since you didn't post the folder containing the custom ship styles (because we didn't ask you to yet :P), I don't yet know what validation is failing.

Oops, actually we will also need your Documents\My Games\GC3Crusade\Designs folder too, to figure out what problems you are seeing.

It does look like you should be getting a popup when you start the application though, something like "The ship style [Aesir] has failed to validate..." with some information about why. Could you let us know what that message says?

I was looking through my Design and ShipStyleSet folders based off the debug and was wondering if the Shipset is not validating does that mean it is because it is not in the Design folder?

With the full GC3Crusade folder you posted above, I am not able to reproduce the crash you were getting, because the Aesir modded faction XML is malformed and so isn't available to play.  I edited a different faction's XML to use the "AesirShipStyleSet", which does cause a crash, but for the reason that "AesirShipStyleSet" doesn't match the internal name of the Aesir .shipstyle file in your ShipStyleSet folder. When I changed it to use <ShipStyleSet>Aesir_2C4FDAAACFB84068B9BD7A06D0B57462</ShipStyleSet>, I was able to load into the game with that faction and see the ships of that style.

A ship style set, like from your debug.err (Aesir Terran Ship Style_ABAEEA99C5394EA897535219B9690704) will fail validation if it is missing any mandatory ship classes (like transports or shipyards), if any of the ship classes listed in the style are missing data (like missing .shipclass files), or if any starbase art defines are missing data.  If this ship style is being used by a custom faction, you will get a popup in-game upon startup warning that the ship style is invalid, and it will use a different default ship style instead. Because you were using a modded faction, which is not distinguished from developer data, you wouldn't have gotten this warning in-game nor the fallback, just a debug message warning you about the problem with the data (like got about Aesir Terran Ship Style_ABAEEA99C5394EA897535219B9690704).

I'm not sure what was causing your ship style to fail to validate, because the data you posted doesn't include a ship style by that name. What you posted most recently does not fail validation, though, and so your game should not crash if you use it.

Let me know if you are still getting a crash after fixing up your modded files.

Ra00 when you say my XML is malformed what do you mean? Can I fix it?

Sorry for not putting the details in before. The copy of the FactionDefs_A.xml I had downloaded before had some <RaceTrait> tags misspelled, and so the XML wouldn't load. I went over to the other post you made and checked that data, and it looks fine.  Therefore, like Cari said, you should be able to change your Aesir faction def to use "Aesir_2C4FDAAACFB84068B9BD7A06D0B57462" instead of "AesirShipStyleSet", and your faction ship styles will work.

Your Aesir faction def is also missing valid <MapColorDef> and <UIColorDef>, which will likely cause a crash.

If I wanted to use custom colors for the <MapColorDef> and <UIColorDef>, how would I go about doing that? If possible? And what is <Appearance>?

Yes, it should be possible to mod all those colors yourself; for example, the core factions get their color defs from the UIColorDef.xml and FactionMapColorDefs.xml files, which in turn use colors defined in the Core folder in ColorDefs.xml.  "Appearance" specifies a set of colors and graphical settings for how the ships of that faction look, using the internal name of a GC3AppearanceDefs.xml def.

For finding more help in modding the data more extensively, you could try browsing or posting in the mods forum.
