Very slow Fences

Fences is extremely slow, when I move the mouse over icons on the desktop in regular fences, it takes up to 1 or 2 seconds for the icon pointed by the mouse to be highlighted. This kills the experience. Then same issue for double click there is a delay to open a folder or launch a program. The process explorer.exe shows cpu about 12-13% when just moving the mouse in the fence.

The issue is not there for a portal fence. Highliting icons is immediate after pointing by mouse as well as double click action.

I followed the procedure suggested for similar issue - high cpu - by cleaning (Purge_Fences.bat) and reinstalling. But the same behavior is still there.

I tried also to remove folder fences which points to dropbox folder, but issue is still there.

I do not have the issue on my two other computers. All running windows 10 64 bits release 1803. Similar setup (same configuration of Fences with normal and portal fences, using dropbox pointing to same folders fences).

I also use Start10 beta, but the issue on Fences was there before, actually I tried the beta of Start10 in case it would be related.

thanks for the answers, I purged Star10 without reinstalling and it doesnt solve the problem

Plus one thing worth noting, I am maning 2 screens one is 1920x1200 and one is 4K (TV), all managed by Nvidia GTX 1080

Would like to know what is the scaling on the 4K TV? 100% or more?

And have you tried the cleanboot steps to iron-out the conflicting apps that might cause the problem. : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#cleanboot

I tried the cleanboot step but the fences are slow also for the new admin and after removing all non-microsoft services. It is very slightly better but difference is not significant

My second screen scaling is 300% but I also tried single screen now (1920x1200) and problem is not solved

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

We have exhausted all the the known causes and remedies for your reported issue. As you can see from your other PCs, Fences does work without the performance hit you are seeing on the 1. We would suggest continuing to experiment with the elimination of 3rd party apps you have running on it.

I am having the exact same problem and from the web searches I've done, so are many others. I got turned off when the customer service manager said they've done all they can do and since it works fine on other computers, all must be good... I'm gonna try the "purge" and reinstall once more, but if it doesn't work I'm calling it quits with Fences.

Update. I purges and reinstalled v3.0.3. I then unchecked the box in Fences settings to create fences from a left mouse click. That improved things a bit. I then installed a bloatware program that came with my Samsung monitor driver called "Easy Settings Box." That seems to have made a huge difference in the responsiveness of Fences. I still need to get more seat time and I'd like to try the latest version, but it seems promising. I wonder if the common denominator is people running a 4k monitors as an extra display.

SOLUTION (for me):

Hey Guys, I had the same issue of having an extreme slow & sluggish desktop while using Fences. I figured it that Fences are using the in-built Graphics (say Intel HD Graphics) as default. For users with NVIDIA graphic cards, the issue will be resolved if you turn off the NVIDIA Graphics Overlay in GeForce Experience settings.

But in my case I do not even have Geforce experience installed. Still I have the issue.

do you know:

- how to figure out which GPU Fences is using?

- how to force it to use Nvidia card. Because Nvidia card is handling my two screens in extended desktop mode

I'm not sure about shutting off the overlay, but to answer your two questions and potentially solve the problem mostly: Go into the Nvidia control panel (right-click on the Nvidia icon in the taskbar notification spot, forgot the exact name) and select the control panel > Manage 3D settings > Program Settings. Find Fences (will probably have to 1. Add it manually. Under 2. Select the preferred graphics processor for this program it will tell you which graphics processor the program is using. It will probably be your integrated one as was my case. If it is, select the High-performance NVIDIA processor. It solved most of the lag, although not so much the GPU use. At least it makes the GPU use worthwhile.

That's what I did and it helped a lot. Again, only for NVIDIA cards. Hope it helps.

I know this is an old thread but the post of messing with Nvidia control panel settings led me to a setting that worked for me. Under the program settings for Fences I changed the Monitor Technology settings to Fixed Refresh from Gysnc. Apparently, it wasn't playing well with Gsync.
