Slow Fences startup on Windows 10

On a fresh install of Windows 10, after installing Fences 3, I experience a very significant delay for desktop icons to appear, after logon. We are talking about 5-6 seconds which is a very bad inconvenience that should not occur. The delay is all caused by Fences, because as soon as I disable Fences entirely via Fences options, the delay disappears and desktop icons appear with 0 delay upon logon.

How to fix this?

Hello,

Please disable Quick-Hide option under Fences.

Thank you,

I just disabled it following your advice. The delay is still there. Just checked via a full system restart + user logon.

Still no desktop icons upon logon (they would have been there if I disabled Fences entirely rather than just the quick hide)
and more than 5 seconds delay to have them show up.

What can I try next?

Just check if this two items enabled.

Thanks

Yes, both items are enabled as depicted. The Fences startup delay is still there.

What do you suggest trying next?

I also have this issue.  I'm running very current hardware i5-7300HQ and PCIe SSD so the hardware isn't an issue.  Disabling Fences shows all desktop icons immediately at logon.  If you right click when the desktop fences haven't appeared yet they will almost immediate load.  My guess is by invoking the right click menu which has the Fences option causes Fences to load immediately.  Is there any option that Fences could be made to run as a service and set to a higher priority?

I also have the same issue,

I have 2x Intel E5-2650 processes + 128GB Ram and a GeForce 1080Ti Graphics card

Fences crashes my system pretty much.  Even uninstalling it is difficult and takes a while.  As soon as Fences installs, all the Desktop items can not be moved, and also, the system doesn't run properly.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need more information.

Its better to start a new thread since not all problem is similar in nature. Please also let us know.

1. OS version.

2. Fences version.

3. Is the PC/Laptop in an office environment? Do it have Forcepoint or Websence installed.

Thank you.

Has this been resolved?

I'm experiencing a similar issue. Currently running: Windows 10 Pro, Fences 3.09.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please explain your problem. Similar issue to what? Slow respond or crashing?

And while you at it please let us know, what is your Windows 10 Pro version? (Use "Winver.exe" is best at getting that information)

Thank you.

Just in case it might be related: be aware that Windows 10 deliberately delays the startup of 3rd party applications by several seconds after a reboot.

This makes Windows appear to boot faster to the desktop, but at the expense of 3rd party applications (which thus look like slow starters through no fault of their own, but still get the blame - win-win for Microsoft).

Setup: Windows 10 v1809 OS build 17763.55 (latest). Docking station with two external monitors connected and laptop screen being used as well.

The issue is a delay in startup and unrelated to any deliberate delay imposed by the OS. I had to also do a fresh install. I've also noticed that if I disable or remove the two startup entries for Fences, it can still activate after an interaction with the desktop (i.e., by right-clicking). Not sure why it would launch.

Sticking to the original post, my system is delayed upon login with Fences enabled. At times, I don't even see the taskbar and I have to unload explorer and then reload it. Either that, or sign out and back in again.

Have you try the purge and reinstall steps? : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Make sure you download the latest version from your account and reinstall it. Make sure to reboot after the install.

Retest and report back.

Thank you,

I didn't need to do that since I had a fresh install. In any case, my work around is working out for the moment. Like I had mentioned on a previous post, I had removed/disable the entries so Windows 10 will login a little more quickly and then just right-click on the screen to activate Fences since it seems to be hooked into the desktop's context menu.

Hi

I run Fences 2.13 on Windows 10. Also had the problem of slow opening but after doing what suggested it works well now.

I have a similar problem. Having re-installed all my software onto a new desktop, including Fences 3.0.9.11, when I start up the pc the icons and the fences fail to appear on the desktop. I have to double click on the right mouse button before they appear. Desktop 'View' does not have 'show desktop icons' ticked on start up, although in Configure Fences under quickhide, 'Always show icons at start up' is ticked.

There seems to be a conflict between desktop and Fences.

Hello AzDude

I followed your recommendation, but it's made no difference. With Fences uninstalled, my desktop icons appear rapidly on start up. With Fences, they don't appear until I right click on the desktop and this is with both "automatically show icons when desktop is in use" and "always show icons at start up" ticked in Fences settings. I did wonder whether my Bitdefender Security has a problem with Fences, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

It's a strange one.

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues.

Try starting up with Bitdefender turned off and see if that makes a different .

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

You are going to want to make sure both entries of Fences are in your startup as shown in Reply: 4:

Hi Sean

I should have checked the replies more carefully. They were disabled, but no longer and desktop icons appear readily at start up again.

Much obliged.

I was still unhappy even with both of them activated. I fixed it by disabeling them and instead creating a scheduled task for "c:\program files (x86)\stardock\fences\Fences.exe" /startup that triggers 2 sec after login.
