Why We Should Go Back To The Imperial Measuring System

Why We Should Go Back To The Imperial Measuring System

it makes sense

Right, so the title says it all, and we should go back to the Imperial Measuring system.  Why?  Cos it sounds better, that's why.

Let me explain:

First of all, when one reaches an important point in their life it is a Milestone.... not a kilometre stone.

Moreover, those wishing to stay with the metric system should be banned from using 'Milestone'.  They can't have their cake and eat it, too.

Another example of sounding better is a Gallon of gas.  A litre of gas just doesn't have the same punch or pizzazz.  Not only that, it isn't as much, and there are times when quantity beats the fech out of quality.  Yup, a Gallon of gas makes more sense.

And when you go to a pub, it sounds more proper like to ask for a Pint of Guinness... though if they sold a litre for the same price I'd not complain.  I'd just have it in two 1 pint glasess

Then there's when you're chastising yer kids fer poor behaviour... you tell them that you gave then an Inch and they took a Mile.  The metric equivelant just doesn't have the same impact.

And what about the song, "Walk A Mile In My Shoes"?   The Metric version simply wouldn't convey the same message or suffering, now would it?  A kilometre is nowhere near as long, nor does it invoke the same mental imagery of a man suffering.  No, a Mile in really uncomfortable shoes is gonna hurt way much more and it give the song meaning.

Another is the four minute Mile, right?   It sounds impressive, don't it?  Unlike a four minute kilometre.  You're gonna say: "Hey, my granny can run faster than that, with her knickers down 'round her ankles.

Okay, so you get my meaning.  There are other examples of where Imperial beats the snot out of metric, but I'll leave some for you bunch of desperados to chime in.  When we have enough examples we'll get up a petition and press the powers that be to revert back to Imperial measures, right?

:-" :w00t: ;P

Quoting JuniorCrooks,

Canada adopted the metric system in the 70's however there are many like myself who still use imperial. Most construction workers still measure in inches and feet. I will say though that once you get your head around it the metric system is easier to work with because everything is measured by multiple of 10's. For example 10mm = 1cm, 100cm = 1m, 1000m = 1km. That being said I am more use to 12" = 1' so I still use imperial measurements.

I remember the reports of rioting and looting accompanying that...

The majority were not happy, especially when the road signs began to change.

Another reason to go back to Imperial.... A 1/3 [third] of Scotch.... I mean, who ever heard of .3 of Scotch. :D

See, Imperial has it all over metric.... which doesn't even have a proper measurement for a cricket pitch.

22 Yards = 1 Chain... the length of a cricket pitch... and thus, Imperial is the winner by a country Mile.

Base 10 or base 12. Last time I looked we only have ten fingers...not twelve. IMO metric is just easier to use. Try using a ruler to measure a 32nd of an inch or a 64th or a 128th......

128th of an inch is about 1/5th of a millimeter....either way you're screwed if you use a ruler.

Even a W & G isn't that good...;)

Now, how's it going with the question re what a link is in inches?

Remember...they are both Imperial measures.

The answer demonstrates the utter stupidity of Imperial anything....;p

Yeah.... "Green Hectares" doesn't quite have the same ring to it as "Green Acres"...

lordy, that show was a long time ago....

I still have a foot in both camps.... (or is that a centimeter in both camps...  ;P )..... I measure furniture and things in feet and inches... otherwise I would have no idea of what size they were... unless I want to order something like a glass sheet, then I'll metric...

and if news shows don't give both on the height of the assailant...  well, I wouldn't know if they were giants or midgets...

I still weigh myself in stones and pounds.... I don't relate to a person's weight in kilos at all...

Most of my cooking books are very old..grandma's era...so I still measure mostly in pounds and ounces and pints with my old measuring jugs....

I'm well entrenched in Celsius...but still relate to Fahrenheit too...

Decimal currency sure made maths class easier than the pounds shillings and pence so I converted there easily...tho threepence sounds soooo much better than 2 cents...

I suppose it's just a matter of what you're bought up with... and how much you use something as to how thoroughly you change over to it...

giving a kid a centimeter and they'll take a kilometer... really doesn't cut it...

I like the fact we still have those old sayings and hope they'll survive the new generations and still be passed down....

I remember when my son was about 9 years old... I'd been on a diet...and pleased with my weight loss... I proudly announced to my son when he got home from school that I'd taken off a stone.... He said that's great Mum.. let me know when you've taken off a boulder....  !!  8|   no kidding... that's when the big difference hit me... he had no idea what a Stone in weight was.... of course... and my initial reaction was he was stirring me... but no, that was just the way he saw it from my terminology...

still chuckle at that one... kids say the darnedest things...
