Problems with DeskScapes using with Fences 3

I bought the whole ObjectDesktop package and was hoping to use Deskscapes with Fences but they don't appear compatible. Whenever I use Deskscapes the icons in Fences are all visible all over the desktop which rather defeats the purpose of Deskscapes.

Can these programs work properly together and if so what do I do?

I don't happen to run Fences, but since you're not having much luck, I do see a setting in DeskScapes that may (or may not) help:

Open up DeskScapes configuration.  Click on the "Gear Icon" in the upper right corner.

A "Settings" window pops up.  Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top. About 2/3rds of the way down is "Desktop icon transparency".  Try moving the slider for "Normal" all the way over to "Invisible" and see if that gets the results you want.  (In DeskScapes you do typically have to click the "Apply to my desktop" button to apply any changes you've made to settings, they're not real-time.) Let me know, I'm a little curious.

If that doesn't do it and nobody else pops in here, you can ask Support (their hours are regular working hours Mon-Fri):

Thanks for your help. I adjusted the settings as you described and now it works. Desktop icon transparency "Normal" set to invisible and "Mouseover" set to fully visible.

Thanks very much.

Thanks for letting me know, as you could tell it was a bit of a guess.  ;)

I just want to know why this is a default setting in deskscapes. I had quite a time figuring it out, and even had to open up a support ticket and waste some poor guy's time with this!

well, i am happy now, but i am sure that there are others out there who have resigned themselves to using one or the other (or perhaps none at all).

Hmm, i wouldn't really call this a solution. If I want to permanently hide the desktop icons, and use the "double-click to show icons" feature of fences, then this is impossible with Deskscapes. The icons will be hidden with fences, but Deskscapes will force them to show (minus the actual fences around the icons). Double-clicking the desktop will just show and hide the fences and the icons themselves will be visible the whole time. The I figured out the settings above were the only combination to hide the desktop icons but changes the "show" action to mouseover rather than double-click which isn't what I want (personally).

Does Stardock even support Deskscapes anymore? They sell the software, and even bundle it with fences in a recent humble bundle even though it's not fully compatible, but haven't updated it for many years, and good luck creating new hybrid/dynamic dreams. The SDK that's required for that has disappeared from their website, and the dream creator tool has been flagged as incompatible with windows 10, rendering it unopenable unless you rename the file.

Stardock do support Deskscapes.  The most recent update was 8.51 which is Windows 10 compatible.

The theme creation tool should not be marked as incompatible with Windows 10.  This would be an error on Microsofts side (they have marked it as incompatible in error in the past when trying to block an older version of DeskScapes).  This should not be an issue in the current version of DeskScapes unless Microsoft have messed this up yet again in more recent updates.

The SDK for dreams is downloadable from the website (https://www.stardock.com/products/deskscapes/)  Scroll to the bottom in System Requirements and there is a link to the SDK.

I believe both products are compatible with each other and the QA team should have confirmed this when Fences 3 was released.  I will make sure they have double checked this on Monday.

I have to uninstall Deskscape for now. I can't have the icons showing inside the fences and not outside. Quite annoying since I'd really like to use both.

If you have not contacted support please do so they can help.

I had Fences trial installed and the purchased Object Desktop. After installing DeskScapes the fences are still there but the icons no longer roll up with the fence. When I roll up a fence the icons just remain, which obviously defeats the purpose. I can also no longer select multiple icons in some fences as they disappear when I click inside the fence. I would have expected these tools to be completely compatible.

Just bought Object Desktop and I'm having exactly the problem described. I should know better, but in my case a reboot fixed the issue X|

I guess I'm going to have to open a ticket as well, as I'm having the same trouble.  If you try to have fences roll up, the icons still stay on the screen, minus the border of the fence.  I've played with the settings to no avail.  Quite frustrating, that I have to call support to get two products of the same developer to work well..Work at all.

Thanks,

Rob

Having the same problem, too bad I have to choose between Fences and DeskScapes. It was the main reason I bought the ObjectDesktop bundle... Would have been really neat if theese two had worked together.

I too noticed a compatibility issue with DeskScapes and Fences. I originally had Fences 3.0 installed. It was easily accessible from the mouse right-click context menu. After purchasing Object Desktop, I installed Groupy 1.17 and DeskScapes 8. Now, DeskScapes has replaced Fences on the right-click context menu. Click-and-drag still works for creating fences, but easy access to Fences configuration has been lost.

Has anyone else discovered this compatibility issue with Fences and DeskScapes?

Jerry

Well on mine right click menu for deskscapes always at the center of the menu and Fences at the top. Never I seen it at the top.

I suggest you try to purge and reinstall fences and see if it help your problem : https://forums.stardock.com/486084/fences-support-faq#reinstalling

Make sure to reboot after reinstall.

and report back.

Thank you,

So I must uninstall Fences, lose all my desktop customization, reinstall Fences, and then set it all up again?

Not a very good solution. I was hoping there might be some way to just re-register the app so that the ContextMenus in the registry would be corrected.

I would rather not go through the hassle of an uninstall/reinstall. Thanks though.

Basj,

That will be helpful. Thanks for the link.

I hope Stardock will test that install workflow to determine if there is an actual problem or was it just a glitch on my system.

Basj,

Good news, after uninstall/reinstall, the 'Configure Fences' context menu option is available again.

Thanks again, Basj!
