No More Beam Defense?

Has anyone had this happen to them in late midgame / early lategame?

I go to build one of my large hull beam defense monsters and no ship in the list has any beam defenses all of a sudden!  I seen this happen to a guy playing a walkthrough on Youtube as well,  all of a sudden he had no beam defense.    Now it just happened to me.   I have researched up to the "devastating beam weapons" part of the tech tree and POOF!  all beam defense reads 0 on all ships in the shipyard list.   What the hell!   No ships require any resources (durantium etc.) .  Anyone know what's going on?

Are you talking about the stock ships? The algorithm for them is a bit screwy. Best to develop your own through the ship builder. You don't even have to build a ship. Just pull a stock ship and put whatever components on it that you want. If you are doing that then this is a bug.

Played MANY hours and have not seen this but bot would it piss me off.  A ticket to SD with a pre & post anomaly may be helpful in identifying the issue

I don't believe this is a bug at all and it happens all the time with the stock ships. Why? Because of the tech you research. The game decides what is the "best" defense to put on your ships. Many iterations ago (pre-release I believe) the ships would be built with defenses for all attacks based on your level of research and what you unlocked, but that was changed. Not sure if it was just the devs that decided to do it or in response to complaints on the forum. But as suggested, just take a stock ship and make it your own by putting whatever techs you want on it. Name it so you'll recognize it and you'll never have to do it again. Literally takes a minute to do and is quite easy.

ah yes you are probably right, i did not think of this because i moded most designs not to use only best D. They still favor best d but put 1 of the other 2 (if researched) for every 2 of the placed best D

Basically you are supposed to build ships anyways. That is really what the game is designed around.

ahh so the game isn't intelligent enough to add my missile defense tech to my beam defense tech,  I see.   I thought it was supposed to be artificial INTELLIGENCE.  What was I thinking?    Forced to use the ship designer.  Not all of us get into that.  Some just want to play.   If I have a ship with 73 beam defense and I research point defense technology,  it would make sense to ADD the defense tech to the ship so now I have 73 beam defense and 82 missile defense.  but no it makes you mad by taking away all defenses and using only the best one?  wow.

I hear you. I wasn't happy at all when this change happened and that's why I got in the habit of just taking a few minutes to create new ship designs when I reach certain levels of tech for what ever ship class I'm into using. The good news is you only have to do it once and they will only appear when the appropriate techs are researched. Again, it only takes a minute or two at most to tweak an existing design. I toyed around with making my own ship design when we were first given this ability but it's not really my thing so I never really got into it like some around here do. You can also download ones but then you're not always aware of what needs to be researched to have it show up when you want it to unless you look closely at the design and what it's tricked out with and remember it. Personally, I just find it easier to take an existing ship and take away what I don't want and add what I do. If an impatient SOB like me can deal with it I'm willing to bet you can to. ;)

EDIT: Forgot to say again that I find it important to name the ship to help me remember what it has/does as the older I get the less free space in my brain RAM I have... :)
