Rampant rumors and falsehoods!

I have heard we are getting a new expansion in February and that it has Human quality thinking ai. Its so advanced that top players like some of our Elite founders who were selected to test it, unplugged their computers and decided to go for a walk.

With their heads hung in shame from being defeated on 'Beginner'.

Stardock will also have the revamped StarBase system. I heard a compete falsehood that .....we will no longer have modules to stack on each Starbase, instead you will select which type and it auto upgrades as you research tech!

Ok so I am initiating possible click bait.

However I would love to discuss whats up and coming in the Expansion!

Can you give us any wee bit of hints?

What good can it do for Stardock?  Judging by the past, any changes at all are going to get a "How DARE you remove/change/rename my favorite feature?" kind of reaction.  They may as well keep it under wraps until it's real and save themselves a couple weeks of hyperbolic grief.

It's an expandalone. Specifically to avoid that ever being an issue. Also, some feedback from the community might help avoid making unpopular mistakes like the wheel fiasco.

There's a much, much better reason not to tell us anything: it'll have more impact when they tell the gaming press about it if it's not been revealed in a post on a forum somewhere beforehand, and that will translate directly into sales. There'll be a marketing campaign, and drip-feeding info about features (Dev Diaries)or doing a big reveal on Gaming Website X are great for that.

The expandalone is the second one, the first is a normal expansion.

Thanks guys. I just wanted to fire up the forums with some discussion. Its been a bit quiet here.

So what do you think they are going to do with Starbases?

Rhonin, Nasselus...what are YOUR guesses and come next week when they start releasing tidbits, we can see how far off we are....

I do not see the point in speculation, I'd rather wait for official info. Plus I read all the devs' posts so I already have a good idea what's coming.

Not to be negative (and I do enjoy the game), but given how the release of GC III went, with a high upfront cost for founders packs, lots of features planned and talk of next Gen systems that could handle more complex data, only to then have a lot of these features stripped and placed in the expansion 'to do list' - I'm probably going to either see what the overall feedback is on the next release and buy in a sale if it massively improves the current game. Either that or I'll wait until the inevitable 'ultimate bundle' that'll include everything a few years down the line.

But im curious to see how the more domestic politics are going to be handled, as well as more options for inter species interaction. Hoping you guys can pull something out the bag. :)

The simple thing would be converting starbases to use the same system as ships, with a mass cap and the same kinds of components, just with an additional list of starbase-specific modules. Starbases stop being unassailable early and tissue with a bit of tech, you can put actual maint costs to keep down the spamming, and if they don't exclude modules from eachother even less spam. Your econ base can be your military strongpoint too.

But I doubt that. I hope it gives us modders more options though.

Larsenex, I’m sure you are joking around, but just to be clear nobody expects or is asking for a human level AI.  I studied AI many moons ago and have had opportunities to apply it in the real world to problems much more complex than a 4X game, so I'm very well aware of what is and is not possible.

The fundamental issue is that the AI has to actually use all of the mechanics in the game effectively.  At the moment the AI does not target Precursor Anomalies at all, doesn’t prioritise Precursor Worlds sufficiently either during colonisation or war, doesn’t use Diplomacy very much (e.g. AI to AI trading), does not use the Bureau of Labour adequately and has really weak late game AI scripts (i.e. so it actually targets victories such as Research).

The 1.4 patch was great and what the AI does with colonies now is generally really good, but that doesn’t change the fact there are essentially missing or weak AI modules. Until they are fixed, it should be no surprise to anybody that Godlike difficulty is considered easy.

But hey, most people play on Beginner and Normal right?  So I fear the recent discussion is being ignored.

Beyond that I'd really like a seriously asymmetric end game threat like the Shakturi in Distant Worlds i.e. even if you are ahead of the AI the game is far from over.  Or even better a range of different threats ...

Yes, I am joking. I know we would never have that kind of ai in the next 20 years.

I do know we are getting an expansion, I was just hoping we could get some hints at what was in it.

Ah the Shakturi event, man o man is that a pain....

All of your points on the current ai are pretty much spot on.

I play to have fun and so far I have no complaints. I know some here feel the game is too easy on Godlike but those are far fewer than the rest (according to metrics) I suppose.

On Insane maps it would be interesting to have a spawn of a 'Shakturi'/Dreadlords type of Civ that starts with full tech and several fleets already enabled. This could be a victory of its own of a sorts so just surviving would make you the 'Hero of the Galaxy' and leader by default.

I shudder to think of such a foe on higher difficulties. ....

Is there any word when we can expect the Arceans to return? Also, with the return of the Dread Lords and their ships, has anyone discovered the PreCursor ships from GalCiv2? I really miss the Arnorian ships.

I have no idea what they plan on things like starbases and other such mechanics.  I haven't seen or heard anything with hints I could interpret.  I blame Paul for being inscrutable.

I do expect continuing work on the AI.  I think it will be incremental rather than dramatic, but every bit will help.  As has been discussed, the higher level difficulties and extreme maps are not the primary demographic of the game, but Brad being Brad and Stardock being Stardock, the overall quality of the AI is a point of pride that will be pushed continuously and steadily for a long time.

I expect continued polish on the overall economy mechanics.  I am pretty sure that is a high priority topic with Paul, along with a few million others, of course.  I worry that it will mostly be little nerfs that annoy people, but Paul has shown some creativity with his balance skills so that may not be so bad.  I feel that the tech pace and values need some more adjustment as well, but expect only minor things there if any.

I hope for AI fleet skills.  This will be very important for those whose demographics are into challenges as much as any roleplay.  I also think it will help the battle viewer be more interesting as ship roles and fleet composition are fine tuned, the mechanics should start affecting the on-screen behaviors.  (I am a big fan of the battle viewer, by the way.  I like eye candy like that as well as all the challenges.  More eye candy, please!)

Because of forum feedback, I am also expecting a lot of UI work.  Or at least hoping.

Beyond that, I leave the guessing to the psychics.  ;)

I'm fully expecting the Arceans to return in the expansion and would be disappointed if they don't. We already know that Torians will be returning from the Founders' Vault, perhaps renamed as a resistance force like the Altarians. Perhaps the campaign will include guiding Arceans from their hiding place/ruined planet to establishing a stronghold somewhere protected from the Drengin and allied with the Terrans. During that the hidden Torians could be found. This is only speculation of course.

What I hope will be there is not only the much requested UI work and features that other have asked for, but also improved performance and... more music :) Music is not often requested, but it can make a lot of difference.

I'd love to see the Ai build fleets like players. I have found the 'tank+Stand off) combo pretty darn good. Load up a medium hull with a laser, fill out rest in defenses (Shields, ECM, Armor) and set its role as escort, then get a capital and load it up on missiles little armor and pair two of the tanks for every one stand off.

It makes getting to the Capital a pain and allows your Capital to stand off and pound stuff.
