Minor annoyance with zooming via mouse wheel.

I am currently at work and cannot upload a file  yet but will do so tonight.

The problem is this:

When I 'Zoom' out of the map using my  (middle) mouse,  the map will zoom IN 2x and then sometimes bounce back 1x. I literally have to scroll the mouse many times to zoom all the way out. This 'bouncing' is really an annoyance and not affecting game play other than i have to spend time trying to zoom out when looking at the map.

I have mentioned this before and do not know how I an resolve it. If the devs have had this issue and figured a work around or something else please let me know. I am almost to the point of perhaps getting another new mouse like a razor to see if the issue carries over.

I was hoping there was a hotkey assigned to ZOOM out but you have not mapped one yet.

Thanks!

I have seen that behavior before with other games and it was the mouse.  If you have a wireless mouse, it can also be a sign of a marginal strength battery.  Otherwise, it is probably the little wheel switch mechanism gone dirty or worn, and there is there is little you can do about it.  Borrow someone else's mouse if you can to test with.

Thanks Erischild I am going to do just that. I wonder if I should do internal windows adjustment of the wheel which I have not tried yet.

Actually, I would like it to zoom out to see the whole galaxy. I keep meaning to dig in the xml to see if it is there. However, it really should zoom out more.

I agree.  I keep whirling my mouse wheel instinctively and I still can't see the whole galaxy.  My hand/eye refuses to believe I can't do that and keeps trying.  It is sort of like running into a wall suddenly in the dark, well, less physically painful, but still mentally jarring.

I have envisioned the zoom going up one more level to a minimap display format filling the main map window. I like the minimap format and think it would be even more useful with more screen real estate.   It would be especially useful with all the filters about trade routes, zones of influence, etc.

Then we can get the zoom in function to get us all the way down to graphical display of the improvement layout!   I want to be able to tell which factories are upgraded and which are not!   :)

I agree with the zoom in to where I can see the ships in the ship viewer size. That would be great! Or see the detail of the planets, etc.

Just curious to ask but have any of you here on this thread experienced the issue I am having? The bounce in and out without a smooth zoom out or in?

I haven't had that specific problem, but i have had a dirty mouse wheel which causes related issues system-wide. Blow out the slot the mouse wheel sits in.

@STARDOCK: While we're wishing, it would be nice if the map was either in 100% icon mode or 100% object mode. It currently uses a 'focal plane' to make the decision on how to display each object. In no case would i ever want a mix of icons and objects. (This would probably speed up rendering logic a tiny bit too).

Yes, I had that too for a while. It was due to one of the issues erischild mentioned: my mouse-wheel was worn out. I got a new mouse and that fixed the problem.

How about if you do not have a mouse wheel and in the ship designer I can't rotate my ships. I use a Logitech Ball tracker mouse?

Ok just to update this thread. I had a back up wireless Logitec 510 mouse. I swapped that out and it fixed my 'Zooming' issue.

Thanks for the advice from posters here on the forum.

Max zoom can be set in the MapSizeDefs.xml (Copy it to the mods folder and then edit it with notepad ++) - change 'MaxCameraZoom'

Hotkeys can be set (maybe) in HotKeys.ini, but I don't see anything in there about Galaxy Zoom, or rotation (other than the gizmo)

They really need to give us more hotkeys for more things, and bindable keys.

On the middle mouse button - I only found by "accident" that if you click on an object on the map and hold the middle mouse button you can alter the plane of the galaxy and spin the map, in the same way you do for ship designer. Very cool!

This would be amazing. I want to see the appropriate continents and buildings rotating with the planet if I zoom in far enough. Think of the screenshots.
