The game won't run. [Probably Steam related error]

Hey guys, old user here! :)

So I decided to give a shot to Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, but when I try to launch the game, I am getting the following Steam error:

Failed to start game (unknown error).

The link, which directed me to the suport site [Failed to Start the Game (Missing Executable)], advised me to "Delete the 'appcache' folder."

Done. - Same error still. after this...

1. Game reinstalled in Steam. - Same error

2. Steam reinstalled and the game is reinstalled again. - Same error.

I am on Win7 x64, but it shouldn't matter at all, this is some extremely weird error, which I never had before on Steam, and I got more games on it.

So, anyone had a problem like this? What can I do? Perhaps I should reinstall the whole OS?

Is Steam already running?  If not, first run Steam itself, separate from the game.  You should get an icon for it in your system tray.  Then, try running LH directly from:
..\Steam\SteamApps\common\FE Legendary Heroes\
(the Steam folder is usually in c:\program files(x86)\ )

The exe to run is LegendaryHeroes.exe.

See what happens then.

Hm, I guess i should reinstall my OS..when I try to run the exe, it says "Error executing program!" :annoyed:

Reinstalling the whole system does fix a variety of woes.

Stupid question that has to be asked anyway: Did you having steam 'verify the local cache'? If part of the download is corrupted it should detect and (re)download the corrupted or missing file(s).

Edit: If that doesn't fix it, I don't think it's directly related to FE. It may still be related, just not in a point A to point B way.

Yeah the d/l isn't corrupted according to the verification...my OS must be in a very bad condition I guess. It's time for a reinstall. :)

I just did a clean system install and the game still won't run, via steam or otherwise.... Windows 7 ultimate sp1

Same problem here, also the deletion of appcache folder did not help.

I have run this game successfully recently, so this is a new problem.

When I have STEAM running it will fail to open whether I try it from my STEAM game library page, the desktop icon for FE, or the FE exe file; if I try the latter it returns "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect."

Thank you for any help.

I have the same problem, I've had windows disclose to me that the  game is incompatible. I reinstalled the original game, one I had played dozens of hours, and it won't run either.  I'm going to give up, I'd love to play this game since I bought it but I'm not going to stress out over it.

For anyone having trouble: https://esupport.stardock.com/index.php?/default_import/Knowledgebase/Article/View/445/162/the-game-is-crashingnot-running

If that does not help, follow the instructions at the bottom for the support tool to create a support ticket.

I was a bit worried about following the advice of @manbatter as he appears to be new and there is nothing to substantiate his claim.

However I viruschecked the file just in case and ran it and he is absolutely right. Fixed the problem for me.

I have to say its the first time I have found a use for manbatter, well .. apart from my son.

:D
