Downloaded Legendary Heroes Yesterday

few issues...

Hi all.

I downloaded and installed the new game beta yesterday and played it for about 5 hours - 203 seasons - one test game at novice setting.

Have to say I really like it. Nice refinements over the original.

A few issues...

1) Massive XP and leveling after one combat and got stuck in the Traits screen - reported in another thread.

2) After 203 seasons the game has become too unstable to play. Regular crashes to desktop. I have the autosave set to every turn.

3) Sometimes (always now?) doesn't exit properly through the exit options. Locks up whole computer. Have to reboot. Reboot screws up raid and have to spend 3 hours while the RAID check runs. Once i did catch an error message that briefly flashed up before the system locked up but didn't have time to take it in. Maybe illegal function call, invalid DLL, bad reference - I really don't remeber - it was too quick. Using XP SP3, ATI radeon HD 7850 and catalyst 12.8.  Due to the RAID thing now I'm a bit reluctant to play.

4) Loading save game can cause a bug where the game world is replaced by a white fog. In another thread someone has suggested that this may be due to an anti-aliasing setting in the catalyst driver. This isn't new and I have had anti aliasing problems in other games includin Fallen enchantress with my fairly new 7850 and catalyst 12.8 (only one used). I tend to turn off anti-aliasing all the time now. Must try to resolve it one day. Trouble is when the anti-aliasing problem leads to a system lock up I have to reboot, screw up the RAID array and waste hours while RAID checks run, so reluctant to mess about.

5) Early progress and game pace and city/character development feels a bit slower than Fallen Enchantress.

6) I'm not a great fan of random game events that cause things like eveyone declaring war on each other. I seem to remember a game setup setting where the frequency can changed. Hope it can be turned off. I'll have to check.

7) I have had a little play with the settings. A fatal flaw of mine in games!   A "reset to default" would be nice to see if any of the problems I have reported go away with the default settings.

Looking forward to next few game builds.

Thank you StarDock. Hope the game is a great financial success for you.

Little update.

Starting playing again with latest save game from yesterday. Obviously restarted the PC since yesterday's session so Windows XP SP3 running fairly "clean".

Turned off the game's ground cover after turning it on to max yesterday.

Played perfectly for about 1.5 hours. Then, after a combat (maybe autoresolve not sure) units displayed as black shadows. Into another combat in the same game turn and autoresolve. Exited from combat summary screen and crashed to desktop.

Rebooted PC to clean up OS in memory, and now about to try again.

Another little update..

1) Got 20 hours relatively trouble free play yesterday UNTIL i started doing quests and the epic quest. There seems to be a major problem with the quest subsytem.

2) When I exit the game I often get this...

All the best all...

Another little update and suggestions....

1) Manual. I realise that the manual is one of the last things that gets done for a new game so that it accurately reflects the game, but please don't ignore this vital little game accessory. Since everything is electronic nowadays and the pleasure of buying a game and getting a box full of manuals, info sheets and maps is a thing of the past, it is now no longer possible to play the game and have a book of instructions in your lap to work through. THE MANUAL SHOULD BE AVAILABLE INGAME FROM ALL SCREENS IN THE GAME. Please |-)

2) The last thing I want to do is put people off this fine game with lots of bug reports and moans. I also don't want to mislead the developers with inaccurate incomplete or out of date information. I would like a little guidance from the developers about what they NEED when a bug is reported.

3) Further to previos posts....

A game running on a PC is just the top top level of loads off stuff - hardware, OS, drivers, network interactions, (just what is STEAM doing and is it breaking the game ever?), other concurrent applications, other concurrent system utilities and so on. When people including me make a post that the game is broken what we are really saying, of course, is that this whole mess of stuff has gone wrong while playing the game. The game may be innocent but may be revealing other issues deeper down. With this in mind I have been trying to get a more stable play experience.

I still get crashes to desktops.

I am running catalyst driver 12.8 - I missed 12.10 and 13.1 is now out 13.2 shouldn't be long. From a bit of research around the web 12.8 and 13.1 have reports of problems along the lines of some of the errors I am reporting but people who have gone up to and downgraded to 12.10 report that 12.10 is much better. I will go to 12.10 and stay there a while till reports on 13.2 start to come out.

The game IS more stable when I get rid of stuff from the system tray. One particular app - Edimax's RALINK utility - seems to be particulalry naughty - takin 25,000+ file handles. This is 5-10 time higher than the next few highest and about 100 times higher than the average. I am not running with the latest version of the Edimax drivers and RaLink utility and will try that - it can't hurt and may do some good. Perhaps this explains some funnies like the game grinding to a halt and locking up, going into save game and not seeing all the save games I know are there. crashing out with file handles error (bit of a clue there).

4) If I exit the game I DO seem to need to reboot and restart the game every time - seems the game doesn't shut itself down properly.

5) All in all though, after a clean boot, with version 0.51, and shutting down all unwanted tray items ESPECIALLy RaLink, and not alt tabbing or running concurrent "serious" applications I can have a really good long game experience - until it all goes tits up. I rarely get to close the game down normally.

6) I used to love Masters of Magic way back when dinosaurs used computers. I have been waiting for years for a successor. This could be it!

Thank you.

I was thinking of buying the LH addon until I seen this ^^.  I am very sad to see that the AI still goes nuts with the war dec's, it's a real game killer for me, and is totally unnecessary.

I found the fix for AA and catalyst drivers is to not to force AA from your control panel and also make sure that your anti aliasing method is not on adaptive multisampling, if it is, it will cause white screen even with your AA turned off.

Tatty, I'm the biggest warmonger there is and the AI hasn't dog-piled on me for a long time.  I think Brad fixed it.  The thing the OP was talking about is a random world event where everyone including you must declare war on everyone else.

Ah, I see.  That is good news.  I hated having my game ruined by the AI dumping on me.  Are these random events going to pose a similar problem though?

My finger hovers over the purchase button.

Okay I bought it.  My first impressions are that the game both looks and feels leaps and bounds above FE.  I have to say LH looks very promising indeed and has instantly renewed my interest in the game.  I am keeping my fingers crossed that they now have the AI on a leash.

I, too, have been pleasantly surprised. It is leaps and bounds over FE in all the right areas.

Tattyhat, DevildogFF...

I see no reason to keep the original Elemental and the subsequent Fallen Enchantress on my hard disk any longer. LH just feels right and gives me a cosy feeling when I play it which the other two somehow didn't quite manage. (beta bugs and unfinished development aside).
